Hello. So I just updated to the latest release of Neon (6.11.0-21-generic #21~24.04.1-Ubuntu as uname -a
puts it) but have had some critical issues.
Antecedents
First I experienced it getting stuck of the KDE Neon loading screen but having experienced issues like that before, I knew to Ctrl-Alt-F4 to go directly to the tty interface and manually update packages with pkcon
. I encountered the “libappstreamqt-3” to “libappstreamqt3” rename issue and fixed via the steps outlined in another post including the dpkg --configure -a
and apt --fix-broken install
.
Current Issue
This seemed to fix things but after rebooting it now only very briefly shows the KDE Neon loading screen before going to a completely blank screen save for a blinking tty-like cursor in the top left corner; when its like this, I’m unable to type anything or even Ctrl-Alt-F4 to a tty. It doesn’t appear to respond to any input but pressing the power button does cause a normal(ish) quick shutdown. It does this consistently. I am able to Ctrl-Alt-F4 for a brief moment while it shows the KDE Neon loading screen but even the tty gets blanked out and replaced by the flashing cursor a few seconds later suggesting the kernel itself is getting stuck in some way.
What does work
Fortunately GRUB still works and I am able to use it to attempt the boot with typical GRUB-style safe-mode/debug menu. Here I can check dpkg consistency (which it claims is fine) or run a root shell (in which, pkcon reports no issues) but attempting to continue the actual boot leads to the same blank-screen softlock. The only possible indicator of concern I can find is on the “system status” screen in GRUB it warns the the “physical volumes” under LVM are “not ok (bad)”. I should mention that prior to this upgrade, I recently installed the Nvidia graphics driver from Nvidia’s .run file which I’ve since learned might not’ve been a great idea…
Request
So basically what’s going on and what should I do about it?
I apologise if this post is terse or contains lots of typos. I’m using my phone to write this as my normal daily driver is the KDE Neon laptop now experiencing these issues.
Edit: I had initially included links to the aforementioned other post and the Nvidia hraphics driver post but it’s telling me I’m not allowed links in my post…
