Hi! Can anyone help with a problem?
During operation, the system froze (Kubuntu 18.04). At that time, a document was open in KDE Vault.
After rebooting the computer, I logged back into the system, reopened KDE Vault, but the document is no longer visible in the Dolphin window.
When I run the command ‘ls -l’, the console indicates that the document seems to exist, but access to it is denied.
ls: cannot access ‘mydoc.doc’: Input/output error
-??? ? ? ? ? ? mydoc.doc
For other files in KDE Vault, the attributes (rwx) are displayed as usual, but for this file, instead of attributes, question marks are shown.
Is there a way to regain access to this file?
Hi! I’ll have to defer to others who know more about the Vaults feature, but for what it’s worth - I would highly suggest migrating to a more up-to-date operating system as soon as possible.
Kubuntu 18.04 reached end of life from the Kubuntu team over four years ago, and even the main Ubuntu 18.04 repositories reached end of standard support over two years ago - so neither source is monitoring for or providing any security updates to your device’s core components, unless you’re an Ubuntu Pro subscriber.
Aside from security gaps, there’s also a chance of functionality issues being introduced as backported patches are added to the base operating system by the Ubuntu folks, without corresponding testing by the Kubuntu maintainers.
And related to that file, while I don’t have any experience with Vaults specifically, when I personally saw that same situation - the question marks as permissions and Input/output error message - it was the result of damage to a file that happened in a sudden power outage, and I had to restore from backups in that case. I hope that yours ends up being recoverable
