2 extra/polkit-kde-agent 6.1.5-1 → 6.2.2-1
1 extra/powerdevil 6.1.5-1 → 6.2.2-1

As of the description of going to black screen after plasma desktop, I would suspect the plasma desktop to be crashing caused by an applet not supported on the newer version.
You can try

  • Backup your desktop layout cp ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc.bak
  • reset your layout by deleting the appletsrc rm ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc.

(to revert: cp ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc.bak ~/.config/plasma-org.kde.plasma.desktop-appletsrc (wont delete the backed up file))

currently I have deduced one of two packages is the issue
polkit-kde-agent and powerdevil
I will need to study your recommendation some to understand it as I am not at your level of knowledge.
I do know that I can successfully operate with a XFCE4 desktop environment.
I am operating okay now with the two above packages NOT updated.

I imagine I should not be having to spend so much time escaping a bug that I did not create. I am updating upon recommended times. My hardware is current.

I understand the concept of “bleeding edge”. I am choosing to run a rolling release. I am safer using Manjaro STABLE

do I need to have polkit-kde-agent or powerdevil

quick google search says powerdevil is a kde tool for power management and energy saving, as for polkit and its kde agent, quote from polkit homepage:

polkit is an application-level toolkit for defining and handling the policy that allows unprivileged processes to speak to privileged processes: It is a framework for centralizing the decision making process with respect to granting access to privileged operations for unprivileged applications.
