Can’t install Kwrite Snap

Hi,

I’m on Kubuntu 24.04 and have found I’m not able to install the kwrite snap. Via discover the progress bar gets to about 6% and never goes any further and just hangs until I cancel it. Similar results from the command line also.

I don’t think this is specific to 24.04 because I experienced the same thing with 22.04 as well. Has anyone else tried and been able to install it successfully? Or could there be an issue with the snap itself?

I’ve ended up using the flatpak but I would prefer the snap if I could get it working. The version available via apt is quite old.

With Flatpak being about 10 times more popular than Snap, that sounds like a good result.

Is kwrite not available in the repositories?

Apparently it’s too old. Kuneiwrite probably.

Hi - is there a particular reason for your use case that you’d prefer the Snap? Barring anything else, normally I’d suggest that whatever works - in this case the Flatpak - is best, but you might have reasons that would dictate otherwise.

And just as a heads up…Kubuntu / KDE Snap work is extremely stretched right now. Very few developers, limited funds - well-crafted bug reports and monetary contributions would likely be good ways to help support the Kubuntu community.

Hi,

Thanks to everyone who replied.

I have actually found that there is NOT an issue with the snap, it’s just that it also installs kf6-core22 which is huge and very slow to download on my connection at least.

Once I was able to install it via the command line and watch the progress I was able to see that it hadn’t in fact hung, and now I have successfully installed it.

I didn’t really want to go into the pros and cons of snap versus flatpak, but since folks asked:

  • versions of kate and kwrite on Kubuntu 24.04 are very outdated
  • kwrite is on flathub but kate isn’t - my preference would be to have the same version of both.
  • since both were in snap, I thought that was probably the way to go

EDIT:

I’ve just found kate on flathub - I could have sworn I had looked and couldn’t find it. Sorry to be a nuisanace :man_facepalming:

Ok - I forget this, made even worse with an LTS release (personally I’d favour this only for running a server, not a desktop)…

Using Manjaro I just get Kate 24.08.1 in the official repositories so there’s no need to go looking elsewhere.
