Can't get to a desktop on Neon Plasma 6

I’ve followed other threads on this subject, but unfortunately soloutions there don’t resolve my problem.

Since updating to Plasma 6, I can’t get a desktop to run. When I boot, I get the sddm-greeter splash screen. When I enter my password into the text box, the screen goes black for a few seconds and I hear a brief click in my speakers, then the sddm-greeter screen returns. This occurs every time I enter my password
and press enter.

Running KDE neon 6.0
Release 22.04 jammy
Kernel 6.5.9-21-generic x86_64 GNU Linux

Video Card – NVIDIA Corporation GK208B [GeForce GT 730]
The command “sudo ubuntu-dirvers” install returns “All the available drivers are already installed”.

I’ve tried suggestions found in this forum
sudo pkcon install libdecor-0-0 libsdl2-2.0-0 plasma-desktop plasma-desktop-data --allow-reinstall
This command executes without errors, but it doesn’t resolve the problem.

The command startplasma-wayland results in:

Error: could not determine $DISPLAY.
Error: Can not contact kdeinit5!
org.kde.startup: “kdeinit5_shutdown” QList() exited with code 255
startplasma-wayland: Shutting down…
startplasmacompositor: Shutting down…
startplasmacompositor: Done.

I’ve done all the updates (pkcon refresh + pkcon update) since Plasma 6 was released, but the prolem remains.

I booted to the point where the sddm appeared. I entered my password and the problem is still there. I captured the pertinent parts of /var/log/syslog It shows errors. I’ve googled them and can’t seem to find anything helpful on the web.

For what it’s worth, there’s what shows up in /var/log/syslog when I try to log on to a desktop. Hopefully someone will see what needs to be tweaked.

I’ve continued plugging away at this problem.

I did a pkcon update and grabbed the latest plasma from the repos so everything is current.

Searching for the “Can not contact kdeinit5” error I found some references about adding nvidia_drm.modeset=1 to the kernel parameter

In the file /etc/default/grub I added it as below:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=“quiet splash nvidia_drm.modeset=1”

Then I ran sudo update-grub. Everything went OK.

Now when I log in using the sddm-greeter I get switched to a desktop, but it’s not plasma

echo $XDG_CURRENT_DESKTOP
GNOME

If I reboot and switch away from the sddm to a tty, then issue the command
startplasma-wayland, it starts the Plasma desktop.

But, the desktop is black and all I see are the two apps that I have normally coming up at boot, (thunderbird and gkrelm).

gkrelm shows all processors are running at 100% and the mouse cursor just crawls. There is no status bar, and right/left mouse clicks do nothing. The alt[f] keys do nothing… (Alt[F2] doesn’t bring up the run command box).

I logged in using Putty from another computer. top shows kwin_wayland1 is using 788% cpu time…

Any ideas? Or should I just keep at it

I would try it with X11 as you are using an Nvidia card. I cannot get Wayland to play nice on my rig.

Did you edit that or is that in your actual log? letter by letter I mean?
Because I feel pretty confident that should be xdg-dektop-portal

Run with x11 until people have figured out how to deal with this.

I suspect it has to do with xwayland because:

And on my wayland session, I still have an x.org log that shows dealing with my rendering.
So I suspect it has to do with your nvidia configs.
If you figure those out, you might get it to play nice.

Yes, this got truncated somehow transferring from my syslog to the forum. should be ‘portal’.

I’m getting by for now under the GNOME desktop that I’m getting sent to from sddm-greeter… But I can’t run certain programs like Firefox and Thunderbird. When running Firefox or Thunderbird from Konsole, I get the error:

[GFX1-]: Wayland protocol error: warning: queue 7fd24195b400 destroyed while proxies still attached:
[GFX1-]: Wayland protocol error: wl_registry@44 still attached

I dunno… Perhaps a non Nvidia card is in my future so I can run Plasma 6

OK… I didn’t know I could switch to X11 from the sddm screen. I just found it… teeny text on the bottom left of the screen. Booted to X11 and all is running well now… I guess it’s X11 until Wayland<->nvidia can play.

Thanks to those who replied to my post…
