when I click on the category icon on the left of the screen then click on expense in the window which brings up a list of sub-categories that are all labeled “expense” I’ve not been able to write a question in google search that will bring up anything that suggests an answer. Newbie to kmymoney. Any ideas?
What’s your question? When you show the Categories View, there should be two top level items: “Income” and “Expense.” Do you not see the “Income” item, which should expand the same as “Expense.”
I see both the top level income and expense items and when I expand both, all the subcategories only repete ‘income’ or ‘expense’ and don’t show what the name of each category is. This also continues to sub-sub-levels. See screenshot attached.

sorry, I don’t have the screenshot with a proper extension. The file on a Ubuntu computer and a different version of kmymoney shows all the category names as they are supposed to.
What version of KMyMoney and which operating system – not the Ubuntu system which I take is working ok.

What are the column names? The first column should be “name” and should show the name of the category. The next column should be “type” which shows income or expense. Right click on the header row to select/deselect additional columns (including type) but name should always be displayed. Has it been set to a very narrow width?
