Changing icons in Dolphin folders (places ) and Light Dark Mode Behaviour

Running Fedora KDE Spin with latest Plasma.

I just want to change the standard folder icons to the Yaru theme.

I’ve edited the theme file thus :slight_smile:

So it all seems to work except all the icons in the task bar go black so I can’t see them.

In fact, icons everywhere go black, in dialog boxes and so forth.

Do I need to create two new themes, one for light and one for dark??

And then set each one to inheret the relevant Breeze-Light and Breeze dark?

actually all the icons in the Settings app have now vanished.

crikey!

is there a template that inherits breeze and you can just change the bits you want?

Well, it would probably need some editing to get just the folders but I checked https://store.kde.org/p/1331947
and that one seems to adapt to light/dark.
Dunno if it helps.

I checked some other colors ( https://store.kde.org/p/1299514/ ) and they work ok. Just make sure that you have
Inherits=breeze,breeze-dark,hicolor
FollowsColorScheme=true
in the index file.

So, like I said, if you only want the folders, you’ll have to fiddle a bit with the set.

Cheers.

adding

Inherits=breeze,breeze-dark,hicolor

in the Ayru theme seems to fix the missing icons in Settings and the taskbar.

good stuff!

though, it seems the light / dark mode theming is in it’s infancy, lots of dark icons on dark backgrounds here and there.

still good enough for the moment and my eyes thank the devs!

Don’t forget the “FollowsColorScheme=true” part.

So, just for the sake of it, I tried that Ayru theme with the folder index.
That set is either not complete or something’s wrong with it. It ain’t the index file though, default or folder one, same result.

I did forget to add that, and it fixes, I think, pretty much everything else.

brilliant!

thank you so much, the Ayru theme looks great now.

Cool. Glad you got it to worK.

On a quick sidenote. If you’re into that Yaru theme, the kde store link I mentioned has a lot of colored Yarus.
That being said, there are a few scripts for a couple of icon themes with which you can create your own unique icon sets. For example, Papirus, Breeze, Breeze RC…( Fairly sure there are more, like Qogir, Arc etc…)
Unlique the coloring thingie in kde, you can create pretty much anything you want and which can’t be found on any store.
A few examples:

Some are purely script. Others, like the Papirus one even have a gui.
Like so:

And if you want this one for folders only…same story, the index theme thing.
So yeah, lots of goodies available. Just sayin’…anything you want, or close. :wink:

I don’t think I understand, it’s possible to have different icon sets per view / folder, based on scripts? I see there are all kinds of scripting and automation options in KDE, but havn’t found the need to investigate. I have simple needs!

I’m delighted with the fixes you provided for the Yaru index.theme, the light / dark mode switching works wonderfully and seems mature and robust, so I’m going to leave everything as it is for the moment, which reminds me to back everything up so I don’t lose it when I inevitably forget what tweaks I’ve made when I next do a reinstall.

There are certain iconsets that allow changing the folder colors on the fly by using either a gui or a script. Change the default folder ( blueprint if you like) to whatever color you want.
For example, the two previous screenshots use the Papirus set. That one has an option to change it to whatever color.
For example:
user-home-open

Yaru colors in that particular iconset would look something like:
user-shome-open

Same set, yellow coloring:

Is it possible to have a folder change it’s colour based on a tag?

Only some support a coloring properly. Breeze, for example, has a tint folder service menu. But “based on tags”? Dunno.
Doubt that Yaru one will have any effect.

Look for stuff like this ( there are others): https://store.kde.org/p/998453
