I’ve used kdenlive for many years for my youtube channel. Thanks very much to the devs for such a great program.
I’ve gone into preferences and under default duration, set 3 seconds for fades and transitions, yet when I click on the corner of an overlayed clip to add a dissolve, it adds one that goes the entire length of the clip, even if it’s minutes long.
I then have to scroll all the way to the end and drag the dissolve back, or right click on it and type in a duration, although sometimes that shifts the wipe down the timeline.
This behavior mystifies me, If you’re dropping a 30 second clip over the top of an existing clip and you want it to dissolve in and then out at the end, that dissolve in lasting the entire duration of the clip doesn’t make sense.
Is there another default setting I’m missing somewhere that will limit the default duration of that added dissolve when you click on the corner of the added clip?
This is normal, expected, and desirable. It doesn’t go for the “entire length of the clip”, it goes for the entire length of the overlap that the transition is being applied to. The ‘default’ length only applies when there is no overlapping clip to define the transition duration.

Why aren’t you just cutting the ‘existing clip’ at the in and out points you want for it? That’s the more usual way of editing.
Having ‘useless’ clips that are completely obscured isn’t normally a desirable thing to do.
