Close tab shortcut - expected behaviour?

Hi,

Is it normal that if you set your close tab to - : it effectively closes your tab when typing ls - from dolphin terminal?

Ive set + to open a new tab but this isn’t triggered from terminal at all. Ideally, id like none of them to be triggered from terminal. How do i set that up?

Thanks.

Yes, it’s absolutely normal.

Just as if you set your ‘close tab’ to ‘s’ - could you work out what happens if you try to type ls?

Defining random or single key shortcuts is a sure way to mess up your system.

Also, you should be aware that there are also keyboards with numpads (when you press the number 5 on your keyboard, it’s called ‘5’. When you press number 5 on your Keypad, it’s called ‘KP5’ or ‘Numpad 5’ becase they are not the same key.

I have a US layout and there is no + key… so might we assume that you’re not quite sure what the keys are called? If you are pressing Shift and Equals, then you should call the shortcut Shift+=.

Anyway, when typing text, or terminal commands, we use symbols and letters. If I set an ‘a’ to close my window, then I can’t get far typing before the whole shebang disappears.

There are also other kinds of shortcuts we use to navigate text; so setting Ctrl+a would be a terrible idea too.

This shouldn’t be too complicated to work out - and this is the reason we have MODIFIERS.

Using modifiers - can you tell me how many there are?

Not only Ctrl, Meta, Alt, Shift in that corner… you can use Ctrl-Alt, Ctrl-Meta, Ctrl-Shift, Ctrl-Meta-Alt, Meta-Alt…

Then count how many keys you have - all the letters, all the numbers, and all those symbols and punctuation…

You can choose from more than 10,000 combinations.

So give up on thinking that just a single press character that you need to be able to use for typing will be a suitable ‘shortcut’.
