Close window by double-clicking the icon

Hi,

I am coming from Windows and really like KDE Plasma as it looks like Windows 10/11, but also have a great lot of new functionality versus the former and I would like to never come back to Windows again.

But one thing I really miss is the ability to close an open window by double-clicking the window icon.

When single clicking the icon, the window menu appears with Minimize, Maximize, Close etc, but when double-clicking, nothing happens.

Can I configure the option to close the window on double-click exactly how Windows behave?

Hi,

Welcome on Linux (and KDE)

I did not used this on windows, i found it very anoying.
But i think i found it for you. It’s a rather ā€œhiddenā€ option

  1. Open System Settings
  2. Go to Colors & Themes → Window Decorations
  3. right top → Click the Configure Titlebar Buttons button (or the :gear: Configure button for your current decoration)
  4. In this view see bottom section->Find the option: Close windows by double-clicking the menu button
  5. click Apply

I hope this is what you mean.

cheers

Wow, this was it! Thank you very much, this solved my problem! Now I can properly close the windows by double-clicking on the window icon.

The only problem with this solution is that now actually using the menu gets really annoying, because the gesture to open it turns into ā€œpress and holdā€ for no apparent reason (and the hold threshold feels really long). I guess you can still do a right click, though.

Yes, I noticed that as well, I don’t know why it has to be this way and not keep the single click for opening the menu, but right click works just as fast, so I would not be bothered.

as far as i know this behaviour is by design to be flexible at all times.

Perhaps KDE could create a sub option : disable (or enable long click) is an idea?

never used that on windows, tried this alternative… going back to the default.

there is a perfectly good close button on the other corner and if you need to have the close button on the upper left for some reason, you can put it there.

This is also true

Yes, of course I know there is an X button on the right side of the window, but the reason I want this functionality is that

  1. Windows did not have the original X button to close the window, originally this double-clicking was the only option. Windows 95 was the first to introduce the X button, so I am just used to it being this way.
  2. More importantly, sometimes I have a window that extends out of the monitor area and the X is not visible. I want to have this quick option to close the window instead.
  3. I tend to move the mouse as little as I need to, so if the mouse is on the left of the window I want to close, I would not move the mouse to the right of the window to click on X, but I would just double click the window icon to close it.

I’m not sure which ā€˜window icon’ you mean.

But there are tons of options here…

ā› Window Management :play_button: Titlebar Actions

Here you can set ā€˜Titlebar Actions’ so there’s no need to focus an icon… Doubleclick can maximise, close, or lower, or any number of alternative actions.

Task Manager settings:

ā› Middle clicking an icon can close that window or group.

If there’s more than one open, then a popup shows previews so you can mouse over one and middle click that to close it.

  • Overall I’m struggling to think why you have a problem - except that you think Plasma should exactly replicate something from Windows - despite having far more detailed settings and options available… Sorry if I missed your point.
  • Windows can be closed with AltF4.
  • Window menus can be called up with AltF3.

krunner

  1. Open some window you can close (kwrite is good)
  2. Copy this text:
qdbus org.kde.kglobalaccel /component/kwin org.kde.kglobalaccel.Component.invokeShortcut "Window Close"
  1. Open krunner, paste the text, hit enter.

It is a strange habit of Windows users to be lazy to use the mouse, but also very reluctant to use the keyboard…

This is something I miss with ā€˜easystroke’ on X11 - the ability to close a window by holding the RMB and drawing an ā€˜X’ anywhere on the screen - we’ll have to wait for the rebirth of the mouse gestures.

It is my preference not to have to move the mouse to aim at targets for clicking (I love mouse gestures, I dislike icons).

Bonus Item

CtrlShiftEsc

:skull:

So hopefully you’ll find that it’s actually better… come back if you’re happy and mark it :white_check_mark:

Thanks for the long post, but the issue is already solved. The answer that I was looking for is the ā€œClose windows by double-clicking the menu buttonā€ option.

Yet it is still not marked solved… could have saved some time.

Still, no idea which menu button you’re talking about to be hoenst…

It’s the button at the top left of a window

Yet it is still not marked solved… could have saved some time.

Sorry, I have no idea how to mark as solved.

i’ve moved your issue to the Help category where you should now find a Solved check box on each reply to your post.

Check the one that solved your issue.

I believe double-click to close was enabled by default for a long time until it just stopped working. I never thought to look under Window Decorations, I would have expected an option (if any) to be under General Behavior.
