I made a template using colour clips with the intention to replace the colour clips with videos or pngs. I did look at it before I started out and saw that when you ask to replace a colour clip you get a huge selection of files. Not mp4 for some reason but .avi, .mkv, mpeg, .kdenlive etc…
However having tried to replace a colour clip with a .mkv (and a .mp4 to be honest) it doesn’t load. The clip just turns black. I also tried with a png. Same thing. No replacement.
Curiously enough if you try to replace a clip which is a .svg the video (also if a .mp4) does load as expected.
Question. Does this mean that you can not (in reality) replace a colour clip with a video or anything else. A colour clip is a sort of dead end.

I will. Thank you. I the mean time I will change all the colour clips with svgs to keep a template. Then it is easy to replace with images, videos etc… I just remember where I got the idea from to use colour clips as a template. It was my favorite chaos pilot Arkengheist 2.0 on youtube. She did a tut on it called split screen using colour clips (so it did work back then as a workflow). Thank you for answering
Colour clips are A Bit Special, they’re generated by the renderer and don’t exist as a clip like one you load from a file, and a few things work differently with them.
I’d guess this got broken when video clips changed from being ‘producers’ to using ‘chains’, while the colour clips are still producers.
Looks like “Replace clip in timeline” sort of works if you already have your replacements in the bin, but there’s definitely bugs here - I’d stick to using real clips for this for now, but do definitely report this one.
It’s in there (at least twice!), it’s just way down a list that’s longer than it needs to be because some options are repeated - which is another bug, but only a cosmetic one, and again only visible in some DE’s. In plasma it only shows “All Supported Files” the actual list of those isn’t shown, but files not in that list aren’t offered in the picker.
I have done that in the mean time I am using svgs for making the template. This works with replacing videos and pngs but not svgs (you can’t replace a svg clip with another svg it seems). It also doesn’t work with glaxnimate files. So there is a bit of work around instead. Anyho the bug is reported. Thank you.
