I must admit that I find it confusing comparing time zones as “earlier” or “later”. None of these times are earlier or later. All of them are now. Looking at screenshot on official announcement, is Auckland later or sooner? I’d say it’s sooner, because they had 2:13 PM sooner than Berlin.
I think it would be best to use “ahead” and “behind”. Makes more sense and I think is widely used. For example take a look at omgubuntu article covering new release (can’t post links…) where it describes this feature:
If you track other timezones in the Digital Clock widget it now shows how many hours ahead or behind each configured time zone is relative to your local time. Cue “Fans of mental arithmetic hate this one change!” clickbait.
I have no issue with it; the “earlier” and “later” is in relation to whichever time zone the clock is set to, which suits me very well. I often change my time zone, mainly to keep in step with various jobs I have.
Yes, a new feature in 6.7. Don’t forget you are 2+ years behind on new features and evolutions, in terms of what most people here are using and experiencing
I actually wish there was an option to show both city and the timezone (or UTC offset) together, at least in the calendar view. There is enough room without it looking too busy, I think.
this kind of “progress” is why i’ve not jumped to plasma 6 yet, there was nothing broken about the “3 years old” way of showing it, and if this was considered and improvement, then why not build in the fall back to the “old” way as an option?
seems overly opinionated to me, and even if this improvement is to be foisted upon us, i agree with elman that it should say ahead and behind which correlate better with - and + than later and earlier
- means ahead, as in they started their day before you
using later, is a different mindset that shifts you to their time (it’s later there than you think)
these are different paradigms for how to process your mental model of the time difference and users should be able to choose which one best fits their mental model.
if i were forced to pick one, it would have to be the ahead and behind because that is the mental model most of us have grown used to coming from the - and + timeline way of thinking about the clock differences.
