Hello everyone!
Is it possible to make a custom version of KDE Neon, rebrand it and distribute it like a new distro/respin? Commercial purposes may be permitted?
Thanks in advance and best regards.
Hi! From a purely technical standpoint, I’m sure it’s possible in the same way that many derivative Linux distributions exist - Neon is open-source software, developed out in the open: Neon · GitLab
Someone with more perspective would need to speak to what is or isn’t permitted commercially. Intuitively, I’d assume that if the Zorin OS folks are able to basically sell Ubuntu + customizations + FOSS applications in a package, then it’s possible somehow, but I’m not a lawyer or knowledgeable about licenses.
I’d be curious, though - what use case would you be trying to solve with the resulting “product”?
Hello and thank you for your reply.
The example you mentioned reflects the idea we have in mind, but we are still exploring, gathering information and evaluating if it is worth investing in. The legal aspect also needs to be addressed.
Thanks again and best regards.
Heck don’t forget that neon and a good number of other distros are already customized versions of Ubuntu to begin with. Mint, Zorin, for example.
