What is the actual purpose and expected behaviour of the --unique option in okular cli invocation? (Both man page and “Help” are excessively terse)

As far as I can tell from reading the code, it prevents Okular from launching new instances, but when I actually try it out, it doesn’t do that. Maybe it broke, or maybe I’m holding it wrong.
