Desktop icons cease to refresh

My desktop icons cease to refresh at a certain point. That is, if a file is placed on the desktop (e.g., by downloading it or saving it using an application), no icon appears. If I rename a file in a Dolphin window, it actually disappears right then from the desktop.

This seems like a bug but I can’t find any other mention of it, so I wonder if it’s something I did to my configuration.

Refreshing the desktop with F5 does nothing. All files in ~/Desktop are always shown other places (Dolphin, file pickers and save dialogs, ls, etc.). The files just don’t appear on the desktop background. The desktop layout is set to “Folder view.”

The invisible files can be made to appear only if those files are dragged from the file manager window showing the desktop folder onto the desktop background. Once that is done the files are then visible, but new files placed on the desktop by other applications will still not show up.

My only solution is to log out and back in. Then everything is visible again. New files added to the desktop appear as they should, icons properly appearing. After a while (an hour or a few of usage) they cease to do so.

I have yet to figure out what triggers them to stop refreshing. It is not directly related to putting the computer to sleep, at least. Everything will be working fine then suddenly not. The problem happens consistently: I have not been able to run the computer more than a couple hours without the issue cropping up.

Attached is a picture of the desktop icons sorted by name, along with a Dolphin window that shows a bunch of files that do not appear. After logging out and back in they all appear as they should.

Missing desktop icons on the left, and on the right them appearing after logging out and back in.

The problem began immediately after I upgraded from Kubuntu 22.10 to 23.04, never had the issue before. Anyone have anything similar or know of a way to reset or fix this?

Operating System: Kubuntu 23.04
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.4
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.104.0
Qt Version: 5.15.8
Kernel Version: 6.2.0-20-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: X11

This sounds like 467092 – Some desktop icons disappear on wake-up from sleep and only re-appear when plasmashell is restarted ("Creating a fake screen in order for Qt not to crash") which is unfortunately a known issue.

Interesting, thank you for the reply. That does seem similar. Though my problem does not seem directly related to sleeping the computer. Plus the icons that are present never disappear: it’s just that new ones suddenly stop being added.

I’m on a laptop and I do frequently do use an external monitor, so I wonder if that has something to do with it.
