Digikam 8.4 not seeing exiftool in default location (Windows 11)

I recently updated from 8.3 to 8.4. When I ran Digikam it complained that exiftool was missing. It’s still there at C:\Program Files\digiKam\exiftool.exe, but Digikam won’t accept this path. I downloaded exiftool and installed it in my binary add-ons folder, and it worked fine.

Thanks for the solution but I don’t understand what it means installing exiftool in “my binary add-ons folder”. You mean into a folder in digikam folder on C drive > Program Files > digiKam?
Thank you

On my Windows machines, I always have a C:\bin folder to various scripts and things. I also do this on my Linux machines as ~/bin.

For some reason it will not detect exiftool in the expected folder.

I’ve got the same problem. If you open a command prompt, change to the Digikam directory and type exiftool then it will tell you that files in the folder “exif_tools” are missing.
To fix it, I downloaded the 64 bit exiftool from here Phil Harvey’s exiftool website (I can’t include a link) and unzipped it. I then copied the exif_tools folder to c:\program files\digikam\exif_tools and it now all seems to work.

A. I Confirmed same “ExifTool not found” problem after upgrading to DigiKam 8.4.0.
B. I Confirmed fixed by downloading and installing Phil Harvey’s exiftool per link in DigiKam->Settings->Configure DigiKam->Metadata tab.

ExifTool install steps I used (for Win11 64-bit):

  1. Downloading latest (v12.99) Windows 64-bit zip from exiftool .org (per link in DigiKam)
  2. Copy the exif_tools subfolder to c:\program files\digikam\ (which doesn’t have this folder)
  3. Replace existing exiftool.exe with the v12.99 exiftool(-k).exe from same zip (renamed to exiftool.exe) to match version of exif_tools folder.
  4. Relaunch DigiKam and Settings now shows exiftool.exe v12.99 detected.

NOTE: Initially I tried navigating to digikam folder and selecting the existing c:\program files\digikam\exiftool.exe. I could select and click OK but no change occurred in DigiKam and problem persisted (even after several retries and restarting DigiKam). I guess it needs the exif_tool subfolder and/or the updated exiftool.exe.

Hello. Mine still does not get recognized by the program. In the settings I see it that is detected V12.99 but still not working. I double checked by dropping a jpg image on the exe file , it opens a windows but then closes after about 1 second. It’s very odd because I now installed the ExiftoolGui using the installer available and clearly Exiftool is managing to read metadatas from the same jpeg. I really don’t know what to do.

C:Program Files/digikam requies the folder exiftool_files as well as exiftool. exe. Both are in the exiftool download along with a readme.txt

Hope that helps!

Looks like the “exiftool_files” folder is missing on the main installation of “digiKam-8.4.0-Qt6-Win64.exe”.
