I have unchecked “Pastes selected text” in System Settings. Well this makes middle button paste disabled on Dolphin, Kate, etc. But this also makes middle button paste disabled on Konsole, which is not in my expectations.
Even if I have “From selection” selected in Konsole’s “Edit Profile > Mouse > Text Interaction” section so it would not try to access Klipper but it just doesn’t do the trick.
Any reason for this?
Linux users generally all love this function and it never gets in the way (like if you wanna scroll in Firefox, middle click works as expected…) and middle click function varies with applications - it’s impossible to globally enforce this AFAIK.
Generally this only annoys people who think it should work like Windows, but a few days later it’s all forgotten.
OP, if it helps any, you can use ctrl+shift+ins to do the same job. Not the same, I know, but maybe useful as a substitute.
Maybe you missed the party but tons of people prefer and constantly request the ‘Windows way’, and there’s recently been the “Press middle button and move mouse to scroll” feature added.
I tried to find a post about when it was added but there is too much ‘noise’ of people requesting it It’s really quite popular and not only for reasons of ‘I’m used to it from over there’ but a lot of ‘it conflicts with these apps I use often’. That particular thing also leads to requests about enabling it per-application, not unlike OP.
If we had mouse gestures in Wayland I’d buffer-paste that way, so I’d definitely want the ‘Windows way’ of autoscrolling, too. We can dream! Anyway I’m 100 miles offtopic, you’re generally well-informed so I thought you’d like to know that this is a real thing with good reasons and such
The problem is I am using a touchpad instead of a mouse, so I often mistrigger the middle button (through some multi-finger operations like scrolling, and the touchpad has no capability of pressing both left and right side so I cannot set it to emulating middle button by pressing left and right together). That is annoying.
I have used GNU/Linux for about 5 yrs. The reason why I want to do this is not that I turned from Windows and hated the middle button paste, it is I have used laptops with a touchpad and without a mouse for over 10 yrs and have learned that middle button through pressing 2 or 3 fingers on pressing area is easy to mistrigger. I recently switched to another laptop which its built-in touchpad has no entity buttons and forces me to emulate middle button by pressing 3 fingers, which before this I could press left and right button together to emulate middle button.
This is annoying for sure - and for me further highlights why I could never live the touchpad life… especially as I use a mouse and with EasyStroke I have around 120 distinct active gestures on top of the normal basic functions.
A little off-topic:
I’ve been using Linux for nearly 15 years and always hated it. So many times I ended up pasting something that should not be pasted to an IRC channel… I’m glad now we have the choice to disable this feature.
