Hi all,
I don’t know if the community is the same as the one on Lemmy, but since there I couldn’t find a solution, I’ll try here to see if something different comes up!
I’ve just installed Kubuntu and I’m using Linux gui for the first time.
I have 2 4K screens, one horizontal and one vertical. With Windows I divide the horizontal one in 4 equal parts and the vertical in 3 parts so that all are almost 16:9 and each have it’s own taskbar (showing just the software open on that virtual screen) that’s so useful to me because I know what I’ve opened in every virtual screen and if in virtual screen there is Outlook, but I need to take in foreground Chrome that I know it’s there (but it’s also in other screens), I can click on Chrome on the virtual screen 1 taskbar. If there are no multiple taskbar, I would have to click on Chrome on the main taskbar and select which window I need (which can be problematic because it’s not always possible to see what’s going on in the small preview, and I keep a LOT of open windows!).
Is this or something similar possible with KDE plasma (I’m on 6.1.5)? If not, could this be done with Gnome or something else?
Thanks!
Hi - folks from the KDE community do participate on Lemmy and administer the KDE Social place there. This Discuss site is fully operated by the KDE community, so it’s basically a dedicated space specifically for folks to get help from peers, share advice, and discuss ideas for how to improve and grow the software and community.
(tl;dr You’re in the right place to ask questions about KDE Plasma
)
Not sure about creating virtual monitors myself - I suspect it’d be tricky as there isn’t a formally supported method to do that using the KWin window manager (465030 – Splitting a big screen into 2 or more virtual screens with `xrandr --setmonitor` doesn't work in kde), but perhaps others have ideas about how to accomplish the core workflow idea you’re going for there.
One very quick thought, reading what you wrote there - if you have a lot of windows open for the same application and need to quickly change among them, it might be helpful to switch from the Icons-Only Task Manager in the Plasma panel to the Icons-and-Text Task Manager (you can get there by right-clicking the panel, going to Show Panel Configuration, and then Show Alternatives for the task manager icons). That would at least ensure that window titles are visible at-a-glance on the panel, which might help in the interim?
Hi JohnaAndMegh,
thanks for the suggestion, I’ve switched to Icons-and-Text Task Manager and it’s better, but the Firefox tab it’s still just one “Firefox” because I have too many Firefox windows open
But, that’s better than before!
Thanks!
Edit: I’ve found the option to not group the icons in the Behavior page

Depending on how you configure things and the exact numbers, the multi-row view that you can set in the Icons-and-Text Task Manager configuration might be helpful for you too - with a thick enough panel, you can really load up a lot of discrete windows in the task manager that each still have a decently sized target to click on. (If that’s what you like!)
