Does the Brightness and Colour plasmoid emulate display darkening when DDC/CI is unavailable?

As Unable to modify monitor brightness (on BenQ EX2710Q). · Issue #1 · MartinGC94/MonitorConfig · GitHub (and subsequent comments) demonstrate:

  1. My brother has purchased a new monitor which doesn’t appear to support DDC/CI commands when in HDR mode (confirmed by ddcutil on Fedora, and PowerShell Gallery | MonitorConfig 1.0.3 on Windows 11).
  2. However, when in sRGB mode, it does.

This isn’t notable, nor relevant here. What is is that the Brightness and Colour plasmoid appears to be able to modify its brightness irrespective of this, even in HDR mode!

Is it merely drawing a dark rectangle across the display?

Yes, it is doing something like that or messing with the gamma values like Linux Mint’s QRedShift can do.

I submitted a bug report relating to this (id: 495433) as this functionality between the real brightness control and this one in lieu of KDE booting up with the display connected.
