My brother has been constantly crying to me about his transitioning woes; as Windows 11 is complete and utter trash. So, now he is whining because he has to get used to how things work on Linux. Or, he suffers the consequences of using Microsoft’s slave state platform when he has no choice but to use Microsoft’s latest dumpster fire (and if he does run Windows 11, I will be sure to put him and his dumpster fire system on a separate VLAN).
He gave up a year ago (after a few months or so) and just stayed on Windows. But with that recent “Windows Recall” feature, that lit a fire under his behind to start dual booting and make another attempt at switching.
So, I have to ask, does Plasma on Wayland support triple buffering out of the box? Does this also apply to any games run through Proton (WINE)? He’s been complaining about this in recent days. Because he want’s an equivalent for the AMD control bloatware that comes with the Windows drivers; where he can specify a game profile that forces the GPU to use triple buffering.
He’s a very finicky gamer (with a software developing background and acts like a snob all the while) who likes to make his life difficult regarding computing. And to top it off, he wants to blame me (a Linux user of course, for 8 years) for how things work on Linux. And says I ignore the problems on Linux in general; no, I acknowledge them and I accept them (and would gladly take that over anything Apple and Microsoft has today). To me, the sacrifice is worth being able to avoid much of big tech today.
So, a very simple solution to this for this problem would be greatly appreciated. Please help me make this torture end.
Signed,
A KDE user of 8 years (who doesn’t keep up with all the KDE features and improvements).
I don’t think triple buffering in games has anything to do with Plasma, or any desktop. That would be the drivers, kernel version, and related libraries. Which would be Mesa for AMD devices. The version of these depend on the distro, but most current releases have good support for most AMD cards out of the box.
Wine/Steam games would still be running under xorg (xwayland), even if the desktop is using a Wayland session.
I don’t recall any issues in this area when I built a system with an AMD RX6650XT, though I am not overly picky.
However, there are a few GUI utilities for AMD cards:
corectrl and LACT. Corectrl does have profiles support. It was the tool I used myself. (I had to sell that machine
)
Since this topic really doesn’t have much to do with the desktop environment at all, it may be worth poking around in general Linux gaming areas, such as:
https://www.reddit.com/r/linux_gaming/
There will be more hardware related knowledge, which should make finding useful info a bit easier.
And ProtonDB is often a lifesaver for command tweaks to try for specific games and graphics.

Okay. Well, since Reddit (and many other social sites) is a pile of garbage (which I block with my PiHole and use Ublock lists that I made to filter out any links to those domains on my search results), I’ll give GamingOnLinux a whirl instead.
Thanks.
Things like the “pics” and “politics” subreddits certainly do bring out the worst characteristics of people interacting through modern social media…but there’s also a reason that a typically very helpful search format when looking for an answer to a question is “ reddit” - a lot of helpful discussion also occurs. IMO, you just need to be deliberate about what you use it for and not fall into the infinite-scrolling trap.
Or, just block the trash and find something more useful and not geared to be like a trash social media site for degenerates.
Honestly, all this tech stuff is garbage now; also full of trickery. And I think the tech is starting to fail us.
I am glad I blocked the big tech companies like MS, crApple and much of Amazon with my PiHole server. Including basically every bit of mainstream social media trash I can find (that, and degoogled my life). Perhaps the only site worth commenting on these days, to me, is Odysee or here (or doing a bug report on Github; as much as I hate Microshaft owning it). If I must view something on YouTube, I use the FreeTube app (https://freetubeapp.io/). But there’s nothing worth watching on there now (all there is, is idiots wanting to be noticed). Just as well. Google is planning on doing server side ad injection into the stream to bypass ad blockers.
On top of that, I also removed all references to domains I hate or don’t care for from my search results (including social buttons on just about any website) from my preferred search engine. My lists for Ublock shows how dedicated I was to remove much of the nonsense from my life:
https://gitlab.com/linlinxza/social-share-ublock-list/-/raw/main/list.txt?ref_type=heads
https://gitlab.com/linlinxza/Startpage-domain-filter/-/raw/main/google-block.txt
https://gitlab.com/linlinxza/Startpage-domain-filter/-/raw/main/startpage-domain-block.txt?ref_type=heads
https://gitlab.com/linlinxza/startpage-promotional-cleanup-adblock-list/-/raw/main/startpage-ublock-filters.txt?ref_type=heads
It’s amazing that when you clear out all the nonsense (that are specified in those lists), it shows just how useless much of tech and the Internet has become. I don’t even have to open a web browser as much these days as I just use RSS feeds for things that are relevant (and I have a huge blacklist of things I don’t want to see from the news; and a whitelist to allow only certain subjects in).
And now I am enjoying more activities outside of the house (like getting back into archery after 12 years). Go figure. Eh? Rather than worrying about much of this AI and other tech trash.
The Linux related subs are not normally garbage, and can be useful. Most are moderated, and for the Linux gamer content, it is where a lot of people post. It is a useful place to search with on many topics. I just don’t visit the main Reddit feed, just my subscribed subs. Particularly for Linux related content, it is a major resource.
I don’t bother with extensive filters, other than general adblocking. I seem more than capable of filtering garbage by not visiting the actual dump.
Well, I am willing to go so far as making sure they never show up in my search results (with extensive filters) and by blocking them on the DNS level to make the Internet less terrible as I mentioned in my last post. I prefer clean Internet. No nonsense.
Also, I went to those Linux gaming subs. Even regular Linux subs were full of people wasting their lives trying to fight the other in a keyboard warrior match. Along with Reddit mods on their power trips to ban people who don’t suit the hive mind. Complete degeneracy; much like the rest of Reddit (and as a lot of the Internet is with mainstream social media). I’ll go to the GamingOnLinux site. Seems like more worth my time than endless trash pits like Reddit. Seeing as it’s a site dedicated to Linux gaming.
By the way, I got a decent answer from the GamingOnLinux site. Thanks again.
