I’m extremely happy with Dolphin Explorer.
There is one small feature I’d like to see, though: Dolphin should have a ‘New Tab’ button at the end of the tab bar.
Am I in the right place to ask this?

The tab bar is contextual - by default it only appears when you have more than one tab, so a button to add more tabs would only be visible when you already have more tabs, which is a bit of a strange idea - and hence why it’s available through the menu, also via keyboard CtrlT
I guess then you’d need an extra setting or feature such that if you set ‘always show tab bar’ in Dolphin’s preferences, then a ‘new tab’ icon could sit there… but then it’s becoming more inconsistent.
Overall it’s a small tradeoff to keep Dolphin relatively sleek.
You can middle-click in the main view, the sidebar, or the address bar, to open a tab. So a button is not the intended way for a new tab.
That said, adding a button for an existing menu item would be a very simple, one-line change. You can create a wishlist item in bugs.kde.org, or make the merge request yourself. I can provide some guide if you intend to do the latter.
I don’t think so, unless my settings are wrong - you can middle click a folder, but middle-click in the main view doesn’t appear to do anything.
I do find it strange, though, that some people use only the mouse and don’t keep a hand on the keyboard…
In the past, with my mouse in hand I’d draw a line up-right to open new tabs (same in web browsers etc), but sadly Wayland lost mouse gestures ![]()
Yeah, I mean, middle-click on a folder in the main view. Sorry.
Ah, that’s actually cool - you can absolutely duplicate your current tab with a middle click on it’s location in the location bar (assuming it’s not set to text)
That’s awesome, I can’t believe I hadn’t noticed that before. Wow, so many ways of doing everything!
@ben2talk Thank you very much for that tip. I’ve also discovered this button on the toolbar:
‘Open in a new sub-window’
In English its text is “New Tab”.
And there is also “Open in new Tab”
there are so many ways to open a new tab in dolphin, i don’t see the need for yet another way.
You can right-click on the toolbar —> configure toolbars; in the search field under “Available actions”, type “tab” and you’ll be able to add “New tab”.
I’ll add another one: when the tab bar is visible (more than 1 tab), you can double click on empty tab bar space to open a new tab.
This topic can be marked as resolved.
Thank you very much for your professional and helpful replies.
