Dolphin - Option for folder middle click to open new window

Currently, middle click on a folder only open it in new tab. It would be great if there is an option to allow middle click to open it in a new window instead.

Also, support for shift middle click (or ctrl) would be great too. For example, imagine if we can config Dolphin to open a new window on middle click and a new tab on shift middle click (or vice versa).

Hi! You can actually hold Ctrl+double-click on a folder to open it in a new tab, or hold Shift+double-click to open it in a new window.

I don’t believe it’s configurable to apply to middle-clicking instead, but that Shift+double-click approach to a new window might work for your use case?

Hi,

Thank you for the tip. I didn’t know that.
However, I tried and it didn’t work in my case because I use single-click to open.

If I change setting to double-click to open, then it will work as you suggested. But with single-click to open, nothing happen when shift-click, ctrl-click, double-click, shift-double-click or ctrl-double-click.

(Tested on Dolplin 21.12.0 on Fedora 41)

Ah, yep that specific function is limited by its nature to only working when double-click-to-open is active.

For reference, there is an existing feature request in the KDE Bugtracking System for an option to use middle-clicks for new windows: 260675 – Create an option to choose whether middle-clicks open directories in new windows or new tabs - looks like it would need someone with the time, ability and interest to jump in and figure out how it could be implemented.

It might be worth noting, Shift+Enter should still work to open a new window, even with single-click-to-open active.

Assuming you’re a Double Clicker:

  • LMB LMB Opens a folder (same tab)
    CtrlLMB LMB New Background Tab
    ShiftLMB LMB New Window

I’m not sure about ‘Open in Split View’ which would also be useful (I usually hit F3 to duplicate then open the folder in place) - and you can set a dedicated shortcut if you can think of one you’ll remember.

CtrlAlt, opens your keyboard shortcuts (searchable).

However, the default action for a middle click is not apparent to me.

  • Perhaps an option for Ctrl MiddleMouse would be nice for pushing it to open in a new window.

These issues were so easy to solve with X11 using MOUSE GESTURES… I used mouse gestures for all these actions (there’s no problem with remembering them, shapes are easy…).

This was also one of the reasons I was always opposed to adjusting to single click as an option - maybe I’m too old.

Losing Mouse Gestures (or Mouse Actions) is the single biggest regression IMO of the Desktop since I started using Opera browser and Firefox with gestures a couple of decades ago.

We went back 20 years… but there’s hope, and I hope nobody loses sight of it as they push ‘forward’.

Scan here - looks like there’s hope yet.

I was last there in October ths year - hopefully it’s going to grind forwards until it works.

I first searched the bugzilla before posting here, but didn’t found that bug. I will subscribe to it. Also, thanks for the tip. I think I will have to use Shift-Enter instead.

I do hope that there is such an option. It will be even cooler if we can freely configure mouse just like keyboard shortcuts.
