The current system package is Version 23.08.5. (in Mint)
This is miles behind the current flatpack version 25.04.1.
and soooo much has been improved!!!

You’re on mint. Hence the version. It’s either flatpak or another distro.
Hi - for what it’s worth, LTS distributions like Linux Mint generally do not provide updates within a specific release (ex. Mint 22, Ubuntu 24.04) that add or update functionality. That’s by design - their intent is to package together a specific set of functionality in an operating system release, and only provide patches for notable bugs or security issues on top of that.
If you’re looking to receive software updates closer to the cadence of each of the upstream projects, then either a faster-moving fixed-release distribution like Fedora, or rolling-release distributions like Tumbleweed, Arch, Solus, etc. might fit your needs better.
The Linux Mint team is ultimately in control of what’s in their repositories - KDE as an upstream project can’t make that decision. If you do have requests to make of that team, the official distribution forums would likely be the best spot: https://forums.linuxmint.com/
Thank you for this clear explanation. I will ask mint, in various ways. Because this version of Dolphin is sooo much better then the default file-manager in Mint (nemo). Dolphin really should be the default for the next mint.
I would suggest you drop Mint if you are comfortable in Linux now cause in reality Mint is really meant for beginners. I would suggest a Arch based distro. Garuda, RebornOS, or ChachyOS.
Such as Manjaro?
Any rolling distro will suffice, if you are looking into having the latest of everything. Arch based distros or Solus or OpenSuse - tumbleweed.
In my opinion holds packages back way too long. Take the recent Plasma 6.3.0 update for example.
I’m using Universal Blue Aurora and the stable version of dolphin they ship is 25.04.1.
If you don’t want to change DE you should be able to grab the flatpak. Though if you want to change, as said above opensuse tumbleweed. for arch I say garuda or catchyos. Note if you use arch its mainly terminal based. Gui pkg tools other then flatpak mainly lead to broken updates/pkgs. but this will get you going with the command differences. pacman/Rosetta - ArchWiki The rest of the arch wiki is useful even if you don’t run arch.
Not even remotely accurate. one size does not fit all. Yes do your updates through the terminal, but installing a new program / package can be done through any number of stable and solid GUI or TUI apps. I install pacseek and install that doesn’t come with the OS through it with the few exceptions where flatpak, snap, or appimage are necessary to get the version I want. Mint is meant for people just starting out on linux and will always be several weeks behind for “stability” reasons. I would suggest you switch to a Arch based distro like Garuda, CachyOS, or RebornOS. Any one of those three are safe, solid, and reliable. As for updating through the terminal in a Arch based distro I suggest install topgrade. For Garuda you’ll want to run garuda-update and then topgrade, all other Arch based distros just running topgrade will update EVERYTHING.
Warning: Usage of graphical AUR helpers may lead to a defective system, for example through unattended partial upgrades.
Just stating what arch said no reason to get grumpy over truths.
Closing this topic as it has been solved and before it gets any more heated.
