Duckduckgo widget issue

The other week, installed Duckduckgo widget and the screen went blank.

Was unable to access KDE Neon Plasma 6 even after reboot.
Only blank screen waiting for me…

Just thought i’d give a heads up in case others haven’t tried it yet.

To be fair, it’s not likely to be a popular widget for a couple of reasons…

  1. It simply duplicates a function which is available without wasting any screen estate.
  2. Widgets load up your system, and if they don’t bring any value they are better avoided.

KRunner handles any direct web searches (assuming there’s no browser at the ready).

Krunner gives you access to Bookmarks, Browser history, Browser tabs, and finally Web Search Keywords.

With this enabled in krunner settings, and using (my personal setting) Space as a delimiter then let’s take a look:

Alt+Space dd kiss principle Enter

Should get you a new tab with this:

I’d take a look at those keywords if I were you, there are many VERY useful links in there - many of which are extremely useful for Linux and Plasma users.

Learned my lesson (the hard way) here.

Thank you for your good words and tips!

Btw, even installing new themes is an iffy thing for me.
Have basically limited trying any new ones to a minimum.
It’s too bad, 'cause it seems like one of KDE’s good tweaking points.

Yes, I think fanboys of Plasma do it some harm by not reminding people that - although ‘stable’ in many respects, you must also be prepared for the worst. Snapshots, backups, and not going too crazy.

Most of us learned more the hard way

Installing stuff via the ‘get new stuff’ buttons has warnings now; but there are SOME good themes.

Definitely take a look at Klassy (my favourite - comes with icons, application style with good settings, nice window decoration/tweaks) plus Darkly.

With colours, click ‘edit’ then ‘save as’ to start editing a copy - colour schemes are the most important part.

Also, check out this guide to adding a custom search to Krunner:

Open krunner (Alt+Space) & type “Web Search Keywords” to open the configuration dialog

Click the “New” button
To add Manjaro Forum search:
Shortcut name: Manjaro Forum
Shortcut URL: https://forum.manjaro.org/search?q=\{@}

Click “OK” to add the search

To add Manjaro Wiki search:

Interestingly, I cannot actually use the keyword to search THIS forum - hard to figure out but the normal method just doesn’t apply.

Perhaps it’s time to make a new post to bring up this problem - it seems nobody is reporting these issues.

Maybe this can satisfy your “search forum” need?

Have this script set as a bookmark in Firefox to search any website:
javascript:q=window.getSelection().toString();if(!q)q=prompt(“Search%20terms”);if(q!=null)location="https://engine.presearch.org/search?q=“+q+”+site:"+location.hostname;

Presearch is pretty good at privacy.

Well yes, I can do it straight from Firefox, but I wouldn’t use Presearch because 1. I never heard of it and 2. It seems to be considered spam.

Do research.
Presearch is quite respective of privacy.
Suppose you can change the search engine…

Btw, have “downgraded” to MXLinux since and Klassy is not available.
Happy with dark “Carl” black theme and “Ars-Dark-Global” for nicely rounded icon set.

Another issue experienced with latest KDE Neon Plasma 6:
Freetube app .deb would not install.
Works just fine with “retro” MXLinux tho.

MXLinux KDE iteration also uses less resources than KDE Neon.

So, all things considered… might stick with MXLinux even if KDE Plasma apparently upgrades officially on the 28th of this month.
