It would be great if Dolphin Explorer were to include the following features in future:

Tabs in Dolphin should be pinable

Dolphin should have a ‘New Tab’ button.

- Right click the toolbar
- Configure Toolbars
- Select “New Tab” from available actions
- Send it to the "current actions
If you have “Folders, tabs, and window state from last time” enabled in “Settings/Configure Dolphin/Interface” it opens the tabs as they were when you closed Dolphin. Effectively pinning them.

I meant ‘pin tabs’, not ‘fix them’.

Eh, works mostly, but I’ve still somehow lost open tabs.
Also that setting is default, I believe.

Can you not then just add the location to the “Places” on the left and it’s a simple right-click “Open in new tab” if it isn’t already displayed.

What do you mean by “fix them” then?
I don’t see anything different in Dolphin’s default behavior with “Folders, tabs, and window state from last time” enabled, compared to your web browser behavior. Both will overwrite the contents of that tab if you navigate away from them.
But as I said, this is what “Places” solves. It provides an icon to regular locations, or locations you want to save so its quickly accessible.
I think “Places” is the right solution, but I think one can understand what OP is asking for: pinning tabs means fixing them at the start of the tabs row and making it impossible to close.

What exactly are ‘Places’? Is it a Kubuntu application, or an add-on for Dolphin?
It’s a set of “bookmarks” following the freedesktop.org Desktop Bookmark Spec and stored in ~/.local/share/user-places.xbel.
It’s used in several places in Plasma, e.g. in the sidebar of Dolphin, in the application launcher, in the default filepicker, etc.
In Dolphin you can right-click a directory, click “Add to Places” and it will be added.

Correct. I was replying to your question “What exactly are ‘Places’?”, not to your OP.
It provides a very similar functionality, and I can’t think of a scenario where pinned tabs would give you anything extra. Give it a try!
I also like the Idea of pinning tabs, but then again I use places and favourites so I don’t think adding a pinning feature which does the same thing would be appropriate. Maybe a way to open multiple open tabs at the same time with a click could be appropriate if we ever bring a “pin” functionality, because that would enable some additional use cases within dolphin, like pinning a group of tabs. But just individual tab will replicate the places functionality again…
A tab can have 2 panes. Places is just a single location.
True, and a valid use case.
However on further contemplation I think a better way of managing this would be instead of split tabs, tabs could be grouped which would anchor them to each other and effectively function the same as split but with the flexibility of single tabs. There are a few other issues this could potentially resolve also, for example the wrong split pane changing when selecting a location from places.
