Hello all, so I’m having an odd problem that I think is due to scaling but I have no idea how to fix it if so.
As I said in the title, I’m running a fresh install of Fedora 41 with KDE Plasma that it comes with. Everything is up to date as of now. I have 3 monitors on my system, the main one we’re talking about here being a 3440x1440p 120hz ultrawide. Steam works flawlessly, so far anything I’ve run outta there is fine. In the Display settings, I have scaling set to 125% and adaptive sync turned on. The option for programs to use legacy is also enabled.
The problems come when I’m running certain things, for instance pulling up the Wine configuration window, it’s mega tiny, so small that I can’t read it. The same goes for Battle dot net that’s being ran out of Lutris.
I feel like I’m missing something here but I don’t know what. Should I reduce scaling when I want to use certain things? Perhaps that’s the answer, but I wanted to post and find out. Thanks!
Hi! I wonder if you’re running into the same problem as the Ask Ubuntu user at the following link - do those screenshots seem familiar? How do I set scaling in Wine? - Ask Ubuntu (Thinking so as both programs you mentioned would be running through Wine)
If so, the solution suggested there might do the trick, as it did for me a while back when I ran into a similar situation. In case that link stops working in the future, it was:
To set scaling in Wine you need to adjust the Wine DPI setting. You can find this is Wine Configuration (winecfg
) under the Graphics tab. In this example under 125% fractional desktop scaling, setting the Wine screen resolution to 240dpi scales Wine content appropriately (for my tastes).
Hope that helps at least get things moving in the right direction,
Thanks John, I’ll give that a shot with Wine. Even outside of Wine, such as when I tried to add the FFXIV Launcher inside Lutris, it opens much too tiny. Maybe it’s using Wine in the background and I can fix it there, but even outside of Lutris, just running the app XIVLauncher that’s from the Discovery app downloader, running it natively, it renders just as tiny.
I know it’s related to scaling somehow but I have no idea how to fix it still. So many hours spent google searching and posting about it here and there (Reddit, etc), but no one seems to have this issue…
Pretty much anything that folks do to run Windows applications on Linux is going to have Wine at its core
From https://lutris.net/downloads:
If you plan on playing games for Windows, to ensure a smooth experience, install a recent version of Wine on your system. This will provide all necessary dependency as Lutris cannot ship with every component in its runtime. When playing games lutris will use a custom version of Wine optimized for games.
It does seem like some folks don’t have much luck with HiDPI screens and Lutris: Why doesn't DPI scaling option work?! :( - Support - Lutris Forums
Given the tasks that they’re typically suggested for, I’ve ironically actually had more luck using Lutris for standard applications (like Scrivener, a writing tool) and using Bottles for games (like The Sims), but that might just be a unique circumstance for me!
It might be worth trying out different tools here - Bottles, Gamescope, Steam, etc. - to see what works best with the combination of software you’re trying to run and base system configuration.
