Fedora KDE 40 plans to completely drop X11

yes. It builds on a lot of code that’s been introduced in the last few months, applying that MR on top of 5.27 won’t work

Sorry but this is not true, it does work on (KDE) Wayland and I test it frequently.

hmm, in my RL job I learned (which has to deal with inclusion on a different aspect) there’s a big difference between “I test it frequently” and “I actually have to use it”, so we need to reach out and get real feedback and experiences by people using screenreaders on a daily base what’s the state of accessibility on Linux atm: non functional, a regression, on par or even better, and then work together with them.

If we (as KDE community, developers, maintainers) take inclusion serious we should not accept nor excuse non functional or a regression even in a transitional phase.

sorry, not to be meant as an offense, I just think it is imo not just a “nice to have” add-on that can be dealt later.

Even Spectacle video recording is totally broken on Wayland (Plasma5.27.9), OBS produces blurry and incomplete output, only vokoscreenNG is working for me.

Nothing on Wayland can beat SimpleScreenRecorder on X11.

True, I don’t have to use it (at least not yet) but they said “nearly nonfunctional” which is not true at all. It’s misinformation and devalues the accessibility work by our contributors and the greater a11y community on Linux. It’s also something you can confirm with about five minutes of work: checking the box in Accessibility settings, and then logging into the Wayland session. (That is, if your distribution has installed Orca for you )

I’m not excusing it, that would be true if it was broken in the first place. KDE accessibility is definitely not perfect (and I’m trying to improve the situation for our QtQuick applications) but spreading false information is not something we should have to put up with

This shouldn’t be happening, please file a bug report. I can use Spectacle video recording and OBS fine on Wayland.

I can use Spectacle video recording and OBS fine on Wayland.

Spectacle always crashes after clicking on Finish, it produces an incomplete and unpredictable output video, clicking on Finish doesn’t stop the counter recording, and you need to click many times to stop it, you can’t start video recording without taking a screenshot.

https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=469336

Both of those reports are for 23.04, which is a little outdated. Did you post a comment and say it also happens for 23.08?

It happens on latest updated Plasma:

Operating System: Manjaro Linux
KDE Plasma Version: 5.27.9
KDE Frameworks Version: 5.111.0
Qt Version: 5.15.11
Kernel Version: 6.6.1-1-MANJARO (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

Then I suggest putting that in the bug report  Noah (the current maintainer for Spectacle) doesn’t visit this thread for bug reports.

Hmm, sorry if it made the impression but my thoughts weren’t personally aimed at you. It was more general sentiments coming from my experiences I see in my job when “innovations” and “inclusion” in everyday life clash and inclusion often loses because of “reasons” (money, time, it’s good as it is, hard to do, will come later, etc…) So, maybe that’s what triggered me to replysigh

I recently talked to a blind person, working for an organisation. His observation was a11y in tech was more present in the past. And he says it’s still handled as a feature add-on not by design. Especially some trends in UI/UX break things for him atm. But he was mainly talking about commercial OS.

Thanks for the reply. Keep up the good work.

sorry for the misinformation, I havent tested it lately and got the information from other people without verifying

I’m very sorry because I’ve been using it with ‘cairo-dock’ with that ‘Alu’ theme for years. It looks more than nice, very modern, well-rendered and clean.

Cairo Dock doesn’t work well in Wayland and it crashes immediately. I hope that the project starts to support Wayland, as this seems to have been a final solution in Fedora.

I understand that this saves time for volunteers. What can I do? I will sit and wait to have my system customized the way I always like it to be.

They have a README about Wayland support: cairo-dock-core/README_Wayland.md at master · Cairo-Dock/cairo-dock-core · GitHub
