Feedback on Plasma

#1 - Create New drop-down menu
When right-clicking, I would prefer if the user didn’t have to hover over ‘Create New’ to make the drop-down menu appear in order to create folders and text files. Instead, ‘Create New Folder’ and ‘Create New Text File’ should be readily available after right-clicking.
I also find it annoying that you have to name the folder/file before it can be created.
These are minor complaints and I understand if others might feel differently.

#2 - Vague icon highlighting
When you are on the desktop and right-click to create a new folder or file, the newly created icon will be highlighted in blue. Thinking this folder/file is being selected, pressing enter surprisingly does nothing. You still have to click the icon, which will turn it a darker shade of blue, before it can be opened with enter.

#3 - Sluggishness
I thought I had it bad after “upgrading” from Windows 10 to 11. Using Plasma is a whole different level of slow and sluggish. Opening an empty text file takes almost a full second while the process would be near instant on Windows. Opening a window of more demanding software can take 2-3 seconds.
I find it unacceptable.

#4 - Drag followed by shift+drag bug
Take a file or folder on the desktop, drag it from point A to point B. Now hold down the shift key and try to drag it to an arbitrary point C. It will immediately jump back to point A instead of continuing from its position in point B.
For those unaware: holding down shift while moving a file to a different folder prevents the annoying pop-up, that asks you what you want to do with the file, from appearing.

#5 - Mute button appearing on tasks playing audio
This is thankfully easy to disable, but I don’t think it should be enabled by default. Before disabling this feature, I kept muting the audio accidentally while trying to open and minimize tasks.

#6 - Icons in the Task Manager being unresponsive to right-click
If you take turns right-clicking the icon on the taskbar (“Task Manager”) and then left-clicking somewhere else, every other right-click will fail to open the menu.
It might sound like a fringe issue, but it is constantly happening during regular use and it contributes to the feeling of Plasma being buggy and sluggish.

Shortly before making this post, I discovered a similar issue with icons on the desktop, which I’m not entirely sure how to replicate.

#7 - Fragmented Task Manager options
To get the Task Manager to look the way I wanted, I had to open 4 different configurations windows:

  1. Configure Icons-and-Text Task Manager (accessed by right-clicking Task Manager)
  2. Show Alternatives (accessed by right-clicking Task Manager)
  3. Show Panel Configuration (accessed by right-clicking Task Manager)
  4. Colors & Themes (accessed from System Settings)

I understand that the Colors & Themes must be separated from the rest, but I fail to understand why the first 3 are scattered across 3 different settings menus.

#8 - Not being able to save error logs
Error logs can’t be copy-pasted or saved as a file. There’s no good reason for this.

Some of these could be bugs and you slould report them on bugs.kde.org.

Some other things are personal preference and you can propose a discussion with other people to change defaults.

Unfortunately a list of suggestions like this is unlikelh to get traction, mainly because it’s too general.

Have to disagree with you on this. I have 15 items under Create New and personally do not want all those items listed along with the 12 items below the Create New menu. I notoriously hate drilling down, but sometimes it does make sense. Especially when a list would be too long.

I’ve now reported issue #4 and #6 on bugs.kde.org:

That’s what I’m attempting to do with this thread. Should I use another channel of communication instead?

I only suggested moving folders and text files from the Create New menu, not every single thing, and as mentioned, I perfectly understand why other people might not want this.
The other half of the problem is that after navigating and selecting a folder/file from the drop-down menu, you also have to name them, when instead, they could just have default names like ‘New Folder’ and ‘New Text File’. Are you also opposed to this suggestion?

I think this is the right channel! Maybe just make them their own threads with some more detail and screeshots, summarizing what has alredy been said on the matter. Keep at it :flexed_biceps:t2:

Then simple press enter just like everyone else does when they don’t want to rename right there and then. Don’t be looking for ways to steal conveniences from us.

The status quo is what’s inconvenient.

Right now, you have to do the following in order to create and open a text file:

  1. Right-click desktop
  2. Hover over ‘Create New’ drop-down menu
  3. Click ‘Text File…’
  4. Hit enter to name it
  5. Hit enter again, not realizing the weak blue outline only indicates that the file is being highlighted, not selected
  6. Click the file to properly select it
  7. Hit enter for the 3rd time

This is what the process should look like:

  1. Right-click desktop
  2. Click ‘Create New Text File’
  3. Hit enter

This is bug https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=494125 or a similar one. It is an intentional (and rather unfortunate) design choice which we all hope will be reverted.

the process on my desktop is exactly like this description.

but i’m using plasma 5

are you on plasma 6?

Yes, version 6.4.5.

sounds like a regression … not looking forward to it.

I also disagree AND suggest you just use “ctrl+shift+N - type your folder name and yer done. Way faster than any right-click-I even did this on Winbloze when I was using it.

AND, if you are having that slow speed issue opening a txt file you’d best look into why I guess. BUT, just so you know, I had the opposite experience with Dolphin, it is way faster than Windows Explorer on my setup.

I realize that means nothing as you are working with your setup, but are you sure it is not just you’re setup?

I use KDE on EndeavourOS, an Arch based Linux for comparison and below is my specs:

Ah IC. I get it. I DID replicate that.

You assume that doing those actions dictate that the newly create txt file should retain the focus? SO hitting enter will just open the file. NOT a bad assumption either if I may so so.

I hadn’t even noticed but in hindsight yes, I do have to do it this way also.

HHmmm, that’s a hard call.

SOME would like to have ti this way, including me.

BUT others don’t care or would like it to stay the way it is.

I will add to this discussion.
I also encountered this behavior, I just slightly give up with the Linux and easy user accessibility (mouse/GUI) after 4 years of use and switching between 3 distros (Ubuntu, Mint+Cinnamon, Kubuntu)

This “bug” can be annoying. Mainly when you want to use only keyboard.

I will also take advantage of this thread and I would like to point to another user experience problem, and that’s window switching using mouse and previews, which is pretty painful. I posted it here in help, but it has very few views. Unfortunately I can’t post URL links but it’s here:
/t/windows-thumbnails-smaller-then-control-window/40201

I use Linux for work for 4 years because of embedded SW development and it’s great for it. Otherwise my main OS at home is Windows 11. I know that these days is modern to spit on Windows and say to users to switch to Linux, but in terms of GUI and mouse user experience, Windows is still better (and some other “every day” work tasks like multi-monitor use with docking station, where opened programs windows are not able to put back on external monitors after putting NB back to docking station, crashing of apps when taking NB from docking stations etc).

I’ve filed a bug report on the issue now: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=512007

Turns out I was way off in my estimates. My time perception apparently gets warped when having to wait for windows to open.
Sorry about that.

If you (or anyone else) have any findings that contradict mine, I’d be happy to share my specs. Until then, I don’t want them to muddy up the conversation.

And on off the biggest of all. Reserve disk space for user interface, cause every time i filled up my ssd, my whole session and plasma crashes. Lol just tried right click one, didn’t even notice it before.

Yes. What’s the point of creating a folder with a default name and then having to rename it to give it an actual name.

I’m all for “good defaults” but 99% of the time you create a folder and then name it. Also fwiw you can just hit enter on the folder if you’re fine with “New Folder” and “New Folder (1)”

Fair point.
It’s having to name text files that bothers me the most.

you are missing step 5 - enter again to open the newly created file/folder.
