Files on SMB in dolphin cannot be viewed in Flatpak apps like Okular, Gwenview

I recently tried Fedora Kionite and quickly run into issues with flatpak around handling files on smb shares. Some research lead me to https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=477615

So today I went ahead and tried KDE-Linux latest build (in a VM). And I run into the same issues there.

I browse an smb share in Dolphin and try to view files with their default viewers

Gwenview: opens but does not show anything besides a endless rotating cogwheel

pretty similar to the bug reported for silverblue/kionite two years ago.

Will there be ever a solution to this? Is this inherent issue with flatpak that cannot be solved?

The good news is that it’s not an inherent issue with Flatpak. It’s just an omission that someone needs to address.
