I recently had to move from ubuntu to windows 11 and copied the latest save that I had to my documents. I then installed kmymoney Version 5.1.3 in windows and made a few entries in the program to bring it up to date. I saved the program using the ‘save’ option and now cannot find that save.
I followed this path: C:\Program Files\kmymoney5.
I searched that folder for a .kmy file bearing the date I made the new save (today 12/10/24) but there isn’t a file with that date.
I then went to Settings/Configure - KmyMoney and could not find anything related to where data is stored ecept for backup.
Can anyone tell me where to look as my hair is getting thin!
Edit: OK, I found it in My Documents with all its ‘bits and pieces’ spread about in there. I would like it in a folder with all it’s ‘bits and pieces’. Please advise how to move it to a folder of it’s which I have ready for it called ‘KmMoney’, not very original I know.
You can save your .kmy file anywhere you want. It would/should never be under C:\Program Files.… since that is where the program itself lives, for use by any user on the system. It is almost always (on Windows) under C:\Users\yourname. You have two choices now to move your data to where you want it. First, just create that directory, run KMyMoney, and do a File/Save As… and save the new file in the new folder. Second, you can just move the kmy file to the new location and then the next time you run the program do File/Open and navigate to that new location.
Thank you. I was surprised to find the data stored in such an open place. When searching on the internet I was pointed to that location.
I will do as you suggest, make a new folder in My choice of location, save it there and delete the file which is out in the open.
Thank for the prompt reply.
What do you mean “out in the open?” I assume “My Documents” is under C:\Users\username, which should be pretty protected against any user other than you. If it’s not protected enough, you can probably restrict access further.
I’m curious why you moved from Ubuntu to Windows.
Also, re-reading your first post, you state that copied your latest data file to “me documents.” You ran KMyMoney, made some changes to the data (I assume when you say “to bring it up to date” you do mean your data, and not the program.) Then you say “I saqved the program” but again, I assume you mean you saved your data. When you do that, KMyMoney saves the data to the same place as it read it from, so I’m really not sure why you couldn’t find it, since it was right where you put it in the first place.
Also, you said ‘bits and pieces’ spread about. All your actual financial data is kept in a single .kmy file (by default - there are other options.) There are other files which store configuration settings for the program itself and for various plugins. On Linux, the data is wherever you choose to put it, but the configuration files are generally under ~/.config/kmymoney and ~/.local/share/kmymoney (it might depend on the specific distribution.) I don’t know Windows super well, but I thought it also had a similar area (also under C:\Users\username) for default location for programs to store configuration data. I’m not sure whether you can change this location, either easily or at all. That’s a Windows setting more than a KMyMoney setting.
Am I misreading something?
