Fix vignetting/dark edges in old home movies?

Is there a way to fix dark edges of a video, like a reverse vignette effect? I have several old home movies (50-60+ years old) and many were shot with typical lighting of the day which produced a very hard light in the center and darker edges. I have tried many, many combinations of effects in Kdenlive, mixing Alpha shapes (and masks), Gamma adjustments, Levels, Limiter, Histogram equalizer, Video equalizer, Exposure, etc. but I can not find the right combination to “dim the center” and/or “lighten the edges” and produce even a reasonably ok result. I wish there was a simple “Fix Vignette” effect. Yes I have played with DaVinci Resolve which does have a way to do this, but I’d really prefer using Kdenlive for this project - the goal is to give these videos to my kids, nieces, and nephews so the can see their parents when they were younger than them! Any help, guidance, or suggestions of other programs is greatly appreciated.

Thank you.

Hi, and welcome to the forum and community.

Looks like you exhausted already all the possible suggestions I had in mind. Sorry I cannot help, and I am afraid there is nothing Kdenlive can offer to do this easily (if at all).

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I have to wait for the developers to add a “Fix Vignette” effect (hint, hint). Or maybe just an “Invert Effect” option that can be applied to other effects…?? Whatever is easier for the developers.

Thank you.

LOL, but “(hint, hint)” doesn’t work here. You need to create a [Feature Request] in the official bug tracker. And then the Kdenlive dev team would need to pass it on to the dev team of MLT which is the engine behind effects and filters available in Kdenlive.

Thank you! That makes sense, as a former programmer – many years ago – I should have known that.

Just followed your suggestion about formally requesting this feature.

Thanks again.
