Flag emojis not showing on some websites

Hi everybody,

I haven’t found a recent topic regarding this issue.
At the moment I’m not entirely sure if the issue is a KDE issue or something else.

When visiting specific websites on Plasma with Librewolf (Firefox derivate), for example cyb3rko (Niko Diamadis ) · GitHub, flag emojis are not rendered as flags, but rather as letters (just like on Windows):

I suppose the issue is neither Firefox (because same behaviour on Vivaldi, which is based on Chromium) nor github.com (because in my browser on my Android phone it renders just fine).

Does anybody have a tip or an idea?

Hi - this seems likely to be a matter of the correct font packages being installed on your device, and being picked up correctly by Firefox - although you mentioned specific websites, so it sounds like they do show up correctly in some cases?

Adding our respective country flag emoji here as a test - do these show up correctly here? :united_states: :germany: :greece:

In case there’s a clue within, it would also be helpful to provide your basic system information from the Info Center app - the Copy Details button is the easiest way to get that ready to paste in:

Yes, I can see those emojis here. That’s the weird thing..
It has worked for the last few years, the problem came up a few weeks ago

Hmm, maybe this thread from the (upstream) distribution forums could be helpful? [SOLVED] Some emoji/symbols not visible in browsers (chrome / firefox) / Applications & Desktop Environments / Arch Linux Forums

I couldn’t follow everything they talked about.
But I noticed one thing even more weird (on Librewolf and Vivaldi):

  • When looking at my README, I only see “DE GR”
  • But when editing the source code on GitHub, the emojis show up:

grafik

At this point I’m really confused..

Finally fixed it after weeks.
Changing my Firefox font to “Twemoji Mozilla” (or “Noto Color Emoji”) fixed it
