FluxKap, a modern Kirigami RSS reader

Greetings !

During the past year, I’ve been working on my own feed aggregator. I needed something to consult my YouTube subscriptions without being sollicited by its interface and its suggestions… I’ve been an Akregator user for around 10 years, but for that specific issue, it wouldn’t do the trick.

So I started tinkering with Kirigami, seeing if I could solve my own problem… and it worked. The result is still rough around the edges, but I think it’s a pretty good start :

It’s basically just a feed reader, though I did spend a lot of time ensuring it would have the widest possible support for every feature from the RSS and Atom formats… including, but not limited to : media and enclosures.

It seemed to me like other feed readers remained in the era of text-based content, and they are lacking in the streaming department. So I made sure media and enclosures were first class citizen, to better integrate podcasts and streaming platforms.

To that end, it also comes with some level of YouTube integration:

  • Displays embedded YouTube videos in the article previews,
  • Imports your YouTube subscriptions from a Google Takeout file,
  • Since YouTube’s RSS feeds do not provide favicons, it fetches one using YouTube’s API.

Perhaps this will be useful for someone else ? And I would welcome some feedback and suggestions. There are at least a couple issues I’m aware of (among other things, the settings pages being horribly designed), and many I probably didn’t notice.

If this seems interesting to anyone, please help me make this better ! It’s already quite good for my own use case, but I’m wondering if it could become something good for a larger crowd than just myself.
