KDE Plasma is very bad at managing multiple monitor setups for laptops.
When I unplug my laptop from desk setup, then plug them back in, my monitors dont remember the way I had them configure them. I have to go back in and rearrange them every time.
Additionally, KDE can not for its life remember what monitors the panel was one. I set it on the middle monitor, delete the other ones, unplug my laptop, the panel I had on the laptop screen is gone, so now I have to add it again, then when I plug my monitors back into my laptop, the panel that was on the laptop screen is now on one of my other monitors, sometimes the original panel from the middle monitor goes to the left, and the other goes to the right, leaving the middle monitor panelles.
I asked about this on reddit, and they said that it was likely a bug with how the monitor configs are being remembered and is being fixed on 6.3. I upgraded to the 6.3 beta and am still having the same issue.
I am using the supergfxctl package to disable my dGPU and renable it when I unplug my monitors, so maybe it has something to do with it.
I like the look of KDE plasma, and want to continue to use it, but if I can not find a solution to this, I am going to have to switch to a different desktop environment. I did not have this issue on windows, it remembered my monitor config every time I unplugged them and plugged them back in.
Is there any solution this? I am becoming increasingly frustrated with this.
Edit: I am using wayland. I can’t use X11 because the packages I need for my laptop, asusctl and supergfxctl dont support x11
Hi - so that folks can best guide you, could you please share the basic information about your system from the Info Center app?
To help folks best guide you, could you please provide your basic system information from the Info Center app? The Copy Details button is the easiest way to get that ready to paste in:
I don’t have personal experience with multiple monitors, but just to double-check, are you able to see if those issues persist without asusctl or supergfxctl?
Did the folks who indicated that it was a known bug, with a fix on the way, provide a Bugzilla ID (from https://bugs.kde.org) or a commit/merge request link (from https://invent.kde.org)?
I had to restore arch last night because I messed up my install trying different desktop environments. So now I am back on 6.2.5. My settings pannel is missing the “About” section, but I have provided my fastfetch result from terminal, hopefully that can help.
I just tried unplugging my laptop without using supergfxctl to disable the dGPU and it still messed up my monitor config. But again it could be due to supposed 6.2.5 bug. This is what they said was likely the bug even though it was still happening on 6.3. This is the link to the bug they said I was likely affected by 488270 – Displays lose setting when waking from power save.
I am thinking that it may just be the best option to see if I can write a script with kscreen-doctor commands. But Im not sure if that would be a viable solution and havent tested it yet
Ah - well, glad to see that you have a workaround regardless!
Just as a note - if it’s that linked bug that’s happening to you, then I’m not surprised that you’re still experiencing the issue on the 6.3 beta, since the relevant merge request hasn’t been completed yet. The bug status is still set to “ASSIGNED”, meaning it has a relevant change that is in the works but not yet committed to the master code branch.
