I have had Kubuntu on this PC for about 3 years. Previous upgrade (to 24.04) made browsing slower and browser tended to freeze with several tabs. After latest upgrade, to 24.10: When I have something like 5 og 6 tabs, memory usage approaches the total (of 8 GiB). Then, when it reaches 8 GiB usage, the browser just shuts down. Happens with both Firefox and Chrome. I used to be able to have, say, 30 tabs, and somehow the system managed to allocate memory without crashing anything.
Anyone got any clue what to do?
Hi! It sounds like the major issue you’re experiencing is related to the memory usage of the Firefox and Chrome web browsers? Since those aren’t KDE software, you might get more responses from forums dedicated to more general Linux, Ubuntu or Kubuntu usage - Help and Support | Kubuntu and https://askubuntu.com come to mind as good options
I had a similar issue after upgrading Kubuntu once, and it turned out some browser extensions were causing memory leaks. Have you tried clearing your cache or disabling extensions to see if that helps? It might also be worth checking if something else is running in the background eating up memory, as I’ve noticed that can happen after an update. Reinstalling the browsers or even resetting some system settings can help if nothing else works. I get that it can be frustrating, though, especially when you’re used to having tons of tabs open!
Thanks you, johan and Ssanj,
I clicked a few links, and supervised my processes. Yes some kind of “memory leak” not specific to KDE. Then I remembered that I do get an error message on start up, something about “Wayland I/O bus” that I could not understand. Then when rebooting to see that message again, I discovered that I could choose to login with X11 rather than Wayland. And now it works, running X11. I have no clue about the Wayland-error, and I probably have neither time nor competence to figure out what’s wrong. But I have lived with X11 since 1999, so I’ll live well with it some longer!
Thanks!
