Graphical glitches and artifacts since 6.7.4

Today I updated my Solus installation to Plasma 6.7.4. Suddenly when playing any video on youtube, or playing games, weird graphical glitches appear on the screen - colorful vertical lines.

I have checked my GPU with Furmark and Unigine Superposition - it’s not hardware fault. Furmark was running for over 4 hours without any issues, crashes or glitches, same as Unigine, I performed 20 benchmarks on “4k Optimized” preset.

I also switched briefly to Debian with Plasma 6.3.6, this behaviour also does not appear there. Only on 6.7.4.

I use AMD CPU - Ryzen 7 7700X and AMD GPU - Radeon RX7900XTX

Any ideas what can it be, if this is a known bug/problem?

Update:

This is reproducible. Every time I log out the artifacts appear. Also on locked screen when I click Esc to turn off monitors, the artifacts appear. Every single time. Which only ensures me, that this is not a hardware fault, but rather KDE/Wayland bug

That sounds like the amdgpu issues that recent 7.1.6+ kernels introduced.

Could that me the issue?

This could be a possibility, since the update also bumped kernel from 7.1.5 to 7.1.7. But as far as I know, these bugs affect 90xx series of AMD GPUs, not the 7xxx series that I have

Hi! I’m having a similar issue after updating to version 6.7.4 on Arch. This doesn’t happen on Debian 13 with Plasma version 6.3.x. I suspect it’s due to the Linux kernel version, since rolling back KWin to the previous working version didn’t help.

yes it’s a kernel regression. 7.1.8 is expected to contain the fixes.

it seems to also affect the lts kernel versions 6.18.42 & 6.18.43

I can confirm it’s a kernel issue, Fedora here I tried 7.1.7 and the artifacts and glitches are there on a 9060xt, downgrading to 7.1.5 fixes it

It happens for me with Slackware current. Plasma 6.7.4, kernel doesn’t matter cause it does the same on 7.1.x and 6.18.43. I suspect its going on between Wayland and Plasma 6.7.4. Previously I never experienced this on my RX 9070 XT. If run XFCE using the Xorg server, no issues. It happens with browsers, games, game clients. I think it is a compositor. An updated firmware or Wayland may fix this.

No it is a kernel regression. Testers report fixed in 7.1.8

Well @barryascott , I now use this:

System:
  Kernel: 7.1.10-200.fc44.x86_64 arch: x86_64 bits: 64 compiler: gcc v: 16.2.1
  Desktop: KDE Plasma v: 6 tk: Qt v: N/A wm: kwin_wayland dm: N/A
    Distro: Fedora Linux 44 (Toolbx Container Image)

and I still see artifacts, just as before the today update. So maybe for some people it is solved but for me it isn’t. In other words when kernel 7.1.8 fixed it, there must be something else wrong.

Then you should report as a new problem in the Fedora bug tracker and also see if anyone else is seeing the issue still over on discussion.fedoraproject.org as a new topic.
