I don’t know if i’m alone but i’ve been searching the whole web for a similar request and haven’t found much.
I recently updated my PC (Debian testing KDE plasma) and noticed big changes in dolphin’s file/folder selection now had rounded corners and an edged box (instead of filling the space of a selection with one unified color).
Even though that disturbs me (being the changes-allergic freak that I am) I encountered a bigger issue : in Dolphin new version (25.12.1 for me), the selection’s brightness changes a lot between hovering, selecting and clicking a folder. The problem is that it causes me photosensitivity issues. I am now “forced” to navigate through my files with keyboard to avoid this animation…
Does anyone experience that or feel the same way ?
Do you know how to disable that feature ? The only topic I found suggested to rebuild Dolphin without the changes brought by request 946.
Should I reach out to KDE’s devs to ask them to make this new selection style optionnal or switchable in Dolphin’s settings ?
Could you be more specific about the cases, or are all transitions concerned ?
Which view mode ?
Or maybe share a video showing exactly the circumstances that trigger photosensitivity issues.
Would using fewer colors, or less brightness changes between the different file item states help ?
You already have reached one, me.
This would need more reasoning before introducing a toggle.
Adjusting the feature is possible, not just based on personal individual preferences, but based on accessibility (like photosensitivity), expressiveness, consistency and beauty criteria.
This is a feature that improves consistency with the rest of plasma that uses the same highlighting and selection behavior.
If a change were to be made it should probably be reflected in Plasma as well.
Because the brightness between every step is now different on a large section of my screen and the last state of brightness is high and is displayed for a short period of time, I get dizzy after navigating through my files.
Here is a video of my display (the artefacts come from the rendering)
To me, the problem comes from the last state (while pressing). So I think you are right, lowering the contrast between the steps might be the solution and i’m thinking of three ways to correct that :
1- making the Focus, Hover and Selection states brighter (I had never experienced issues with dolphin before because the basic selection was bright so my eyes had time to adapt)
2- add the option to remove the last “click” state (as it’s basically what I do with my keyboard)
3- make the last state a lot closer to the “Focus, Hover, Selection” state shown in PR 930 in term of brightness
Thank you for reaching out then
I totally understand that, I was originally just asking to see if I was the only one in that case or if there was a twist I didn’t know.
I also understand the change and i’ve seen this change in many selection items in plasma, most of wich didn’t bother me much because the highlight boxes wern’t big enough for my eyes to consider them being flashes (and so far, i’ve never seen a selection box being significantly brighter on-click anywhere else than in dolphin).
Just to clarify : I don’t get petrified every time I click a folder but I feel slightly tiered from there I know that is not good in the long run.
Note : if I switch to Icon mode in Dolphin, my problem doesn’t seem to show up since the highlighting box is smaller
PS : I was using a green layout in my example but I get the same effect from the Breeze Dark theme
