Hide "Noto Sans/Serif [Random Language]" fonts toggle

Hi, when using font selectors it can be very annoying to find any font whose name starts with a letter after N. The Noto font family has dozens or hundreds of fonts in the list, and it can be very annoying to scroll past those, especially because almost all of them are meant only for languages that aren’t the system default. Each of them have various weights listed in addition. While having Noto installed is great for compatibility purposes, there should be a way to hide all of them (maybe a drop-down arrow or filtering system, we already can filter for monospaced fonts, so adding a language filter and a serif vs. sans filter would be nice.)

For example, I as an English speaker who happens to be learning Fusha Arabic and Cypriot Greek would only want to see fonts in those three languages. I don’t need to see 6 weights each of Telugu, Hebrew, Phoenician, etc.

Given how Noto is pretty much the only font family that covers so many languages, it’s pretty universally installed on many devices, so it has special status where I think we can treat it different than other fonts.

you are aware of the existing feature to create font groups and deactivate fonts so they don’t show up in applications, right?

settings > font management > group

i made a group called weird unused font and added to it all the fonts i never need to see again.

then in the font: satus pane, you can select all, and right click for the Disable option in the menu to change their status.

i’ll try that out tysm!

But also, that should probably be enabled by default ig?

the problem with making a default group selection like that would be knowing in advance what a given user considers “weird” or fonts that will go “unused” for them.

i know which ones i think are weird and will never use, but that’ just me… i would never expect my distro to have an opinion on that.
