How can I disable my HDMI monitor as an audio device without disabling all other monitors

I have two monitors, one connected via DP as my main, one connected as HDMI. Both are capable of playing audio. For whatever reason, both of them are listed under the same sink in the plasma-pa applet, and the HDMI one that I don’t want to use is treated as the default (see attached screenshot):

I would like to hide the “HDMI” output (my second monitor), and only see the “HDMI 4” option (which is actually my DisplayPort monitor erroneously labelled as HDMI). I don’t see the option to do so from this window, I can only turn them both “off”. Is this possible? And if not, can I achieve something similar through the terminal?

you can create a udev rule to disable it.

I’ve never used udev before and the examples I can find online don’t seem very applicable to my use case. Can you give me an example of how to do this?

Just type lspci -v in a terminal and let me know the output. Then I may be able to write for you the exact rule at some time (maybe after a couple of hours or so)

For the record, I also tried disabling it through pactl based on similar questions I found online but I could not disable the specific port, only the entire sink (much like the GUI), which includes the display I do want to use. Then I tried manually adjusting the priority for “HDMI 4” so it was higher than “HDMI” through a config file but that had no effect.

Hmmm… it’s not what I expected to see (I had the wrong impression I guess). I get it now: it’s a single HDMI device with multiple outputs. And you also have a third device using the same driver. And I guess you need to disable the one of the three outputs.

Try the following

Create a file named snd_hda.conf in /etc/modprobe.d/ with the following contents


options snd_hda_intel enable=1,1,0

and reboot

it should disable one of the outputs. If it disables the wrong one then try other combinations like

options snd_hda_intel enable=1,0,1

or

options snd_hda_intel enable=0,1,1

etc., until the correct one is disabled. I hope you get it.

I’m just guessing here, and I’m describing what I would have tried in a similar situation in the hope that it works. If it doesn’t work at all, just remember to remove that file.
