So I’m not having much luck getting this Edna KDE Plasma theme installed fully. If I download it from Gitlab, it has ALL the parts in one folder, meaning: Plasma Theme, Kvantum Theme, Color-scheme, Konsole, Aurorae theme, Wallpaper, etc. So far, I can get the Kvantum theme to install as well as the color scheme. But not Plasma or Aurorae window decorations to install. The author has NO directions on any page of his themes. Pling, Gitlab or his own personal site and the Readme is nothing. On some sites it’s blank and on other sites it just shows a preview photo of the desktop with the theme installed. Totally unhelpful.
So just wondering if anyone knows how to install this Theme? And if you do, can you please explain it in very simple, easy to understand terminology that someone that has never used Linux could understand please? Because I barely know anything about Linux yet and even when there are “instructions”, they’re not written for beginners. They’re written for someone that already knows a decent amount about Linux.
I’m running Kubuntu 24.04.1 LTS and it has Plasma 5.27
I had no problems installing themes and customizing on Linux Mint. It was super easy and everything worked first time. Not so on Plasma. It’s proving to be a LOT more complicated and complex and I don’t even understand what I’m doing some of the times.
Second part:
Which brings me to my next line of questions that deal with this. What EXACTLY is affected and changes when you change the Plasma theme? What IS the plasma theme?
What exactly is affected and changes when you change the Kvantum theme? What IS the Kvantum theme?
And I did find out what Aurorae themes are, it basically says they are window decorations. And I can see that in the Aurorae folder. They’re little green, blue and red buttons and window shapes that look an awful lot like Mac. But how do you install them? This Edna theme has an Aurorae folder in it, but I can’t figure out how to install it. It has no instructions.
i would recommend you only install themes from the "get new… " button in settings rather than downloading things.
if you want make a contribution of this theme to the kde store, then just follow the instructions on how to contribute which you will find right there in the settings window.
also from my notes:
## THEMES AND COLORS ##
#a global theme can add items to these settings, but may not remove them all upon uninstall
- Appearance > Global Theme
- Appearance > Plasma Style
- Appearance > Colors
- Appearance > Windows Decorations
- Appearance > Icons
- Appearance > Cursors
- Appearance > Splash Screen
- Startup and Shutdown > SDDM
#need to manually check each settings page, select the red trash can(s) and hit apply
Myeeaah…this is quite a question. So yeah, first of all, if you have no clue what is what and where that what needs to go, then do what Skyfish mentioned. Get new from the button settings. Although Edna might not be available with that method. So…
the kvantum theme goes into ~/.config/Kvantum
the color scheme goes into ~/.local/share/color-schemes
the plasma theme goes into ~/.local/share/plasma/desktoptheme/
the aurorae theme goes into ~/.local/share/aurorae/themes/ ( if needed, create that directory)
the wallpaper goes to wherever directory you use for wallpapers
the konsole colorscheme goes into ~/.local/share/konsole/
I suggest you do some reading on what the plasma theme is.
I suggest you do some reading on what the Kvantum application style is.
In either case, if you want Edna to work properly you need to install Kvantum from the repos ( once the theme is properly installed you’ll find it in the kvantum manager) and switch to kvantum application style in system settings. Same goes for your overall colorscheme settings and your window decoration.
So I couldn’t figure how to get the Aurorae theme part to install. Plus once I got Edna installed, I didn’t totally love the super bright teal/bluish color. It’s very nice, but not what I’m looking for. So I just went to Orchis! LOVE IT!. Thanks for the info though.
And yes, I know where all of those things go. And how to use them etc. But thank you for sharing just in case I didn’t. Much appreciated. I was more asking: what PART of the DE do they change? I found out some of what they do with lots of googling, but still not 100% sure. And again, the only part of the theme that was not working was the Aurorae part.
Ah, good. Well, know that you can take customization up a notch on kde. Custom window decorations, custom application styles, run apps in kvantum regardless of application style, set transparency in colorschemes etc etc…Have fun.
Haha, yes, it’s actually overwhelming how much you can change . I don’t even know half of what I can edit, and the half I know I can edit, I don’t even know half of what it actually edits, haha.
I feel like Plasma is a DE that you go on a journey with. Not just setup and move on with other stuff like Gnome. I keep finding stuff everyday I had NO idea was even part of Plasma. It’s cool, but also a lot. I’m still just trying to get the basics down, learning how to use the terminal, etc. I’m doing pretty well, but still, almost everyday run into some problem or another. Thanks again
