How to move and create sticky notes

I just discovered that there is a great built-in feature where I can mark text in any window and then drag it to the desktop which will in turn create a sticky note on the desktop.

Q1: However, I’m unable to move this note around. There are several suggestions on the Internet (such as holding CTRL or META key) but none of them works for me. The only way I found so far is to enter the edit mode (through the context menu) but that’s somehow impractical.

Q2: How can I create a desktop sticky note on the fly (without the need to drag some text to it)? There are suggestions to middle-click but that doesn’t work for me either.

Operating System: Kubuntu 25.10
KDE Plasma Version: 6.4.5
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.17.0
Qt Version: 6.9.2
Kernel Version: 6.17.0-14-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland

I think you need to go into EDIT mode to move widgets around…

The fastest way (for me) is to right click the desktop and hit M on the keyboard… so then you can also resize it to fit the text tighter or whatever (or even rotate it if you like a messy desk with notes casually tossed around).

I actually find this rather cumbersome - I’d prefer an option to drop it and have a note.txt file created… but I don’t think that’s an option… it doesn’t seem to work with Dolphin either.

  • Also it’s good to pop open an editor (I like fresh, kwrite, and kate best) when I’m dragging text out.

Obviously if you just want to get the text, copying it will make a hard copy to your clipboard manager.

You can move, resize, rotate, etc. a sticky note by long clicking on it.

Notes are actually text (HTML) files under ~/.local/share/plasma_notes/.

this is a revelation!

seems to work on any desktop widget.

but not on widgets contained inside a panel

@ben2talk ‘s click then M shortcut is also a revelation and not what is shown on the context menu as Alt+D, E which is far more complicated.

how are lowly users like me supposed to discover such thing?

what other little easter eggs exist that only the guru’s know about?

Ahem…

Underlined M on desktop click (though I’m not totally sure this is default, as the context menu can be edited via ‘Desktop and Wallpaper’).

Woah - now I’ve got to add Long Clicking to my repertoire… that’s sneaky

Haha well that’s a surprise - for sure you pay a heavy price for your stability. Meanwhile I just had another ten second update without incident  though I am still held back to plasma 6.5.5.

That’s the ‘Standard Desktop Menu’ - I guess they dragged those shortcuts into line in a recent update.

There are similar menus in MPV too - they’re called ‘chorded’ menus - I quite like them there, so pressing ‘g’ and ‘m’ brings up an interactive menu… and ‘g’ with ‘a’ gets you ‘audio selection’.
