I have made modifications to my custom theme (Ritvik), how do I save my changes as the same theme ?
Clicking the Save current theme button on the top right prompts me to create a new theme which is not what I want to do.
It will create a theme from your current theme state.
That is precisely what you want.
What I was looking for was a way to simply modify the “Ritvik” theme. Saving a new theme, deleting the old one and renaming the new theme to be the same as the old one sounds like a cumbersome process to go through each time.
I see your point, we could have a « save into theme» or «override theme» button.
But that doesn’t seem something maybe users would use, only theme designers. How many are they and how often they would use it. You only need this when you want to distribute a new theme version.

as with any of the canned themes (breeze, etc) you cannot save over those themes so instead you are able to save a copy of those themes under your own name.
not sure, because i haven’t tried this, but you could save your copy as “tmp theme” and then remove the theme with the name you want to use… then just rename your them to have the name of the theme you removed.
but i wouldn’t bother with all that and just give it a name that’s yours and be done with it.
If you use the original theme name, your edits might get overwritten when Discover updates that theme. So either avoid updating the theme or use a different name.
discover won’t update a theme that is not installed… but if you wanted to do this with one of the canned themes that you cannot uninstall, then yes, that would be a problem.
I often mess around with and slightly tweak panel layouts, default wallpapers, etc… every few months.
If i don’t save these changes to my custom theme, then I lose all the minor tweaks I made whenever I have to change to a different global theme and back. Eg: while showing how easy Linux theming is to Windows users, while trying out new global themes, etc…
So updating the custom global theme you created to the current state of the desktop seems like a useful thing to have even if you aren’t a theme designer.
That is what I have been doing but I thought that there was a simpler approach that I was missing which is why I created this post to ask for help.
The name is custom but coming up with a new name -> saving the theme with the new name -> deleting the old one or giving it a temp name -> deleting the old one -> creating a new theme with the old name -> deleting the temp one. are both too cumbersome for what can be a single extra save theme button while renaming the button we have right now to something like save as new theme .
I guess I will open a feature request to do this.
the point of the UX being the way it is, is to prevent you from overwriting an existing theme (unless it is one you created yourself).
i don’t think a feature request to make it more likely that a user could inadvertently overwrite an installed theme is going to go over well when you can simply rename the theme and avoid all of this.
if you need a specific theme name to be a specific way by default, that is something you could take up with the theme developer… but i suspect they will also just tell you save your own copy and move on since that is the path of least resistance to get what you want.
That is the point, I can’t overwrite a global theme I created myself
if you created the global theme, then why not just go back and create it how you want to be?
i’m having a hard time seeing the problem here.
do you want to be able to tweak your own theme after the fact?
if so then it would be like tweaking any other global theme, you would save a copy with your own mods under a different name.
