I used to have an older version where I had the “transfer” option to move money from one account to another. In the new version, I can’t find this option — I only see “withdraw” and “deposit.” How do I do it? Thanks.

Select the other account in the Category drop-down.
I don’t understand….
In KMyMoney, categories are just Accounts of type Income or Expense, but the dropdown where you enter the Category can easily show any type of account. For a common payment transaction, you are transferring money from an account such as checking to a category (which is actually an expense account.) For a transfer transaction, you are transferring money from one account to another - and you do this by selecting the “other” account in the dropdown where you would select the category for a regular transaction. There is no need to explicitly tell the program it is a transfer - it is obvious based on the choice of the two accounts.
Thanks, I understand. I just hope that when I opened the database created with an earlier version, it didn’t mess up the transfers.
Nothing about the internal storage of transactions has changed, just the UI for entering/editing them.
Thanks - I am a new user (three weeks) and was struggling with this - the answer works of course but missing from it was to confirm that (as I discovered) you can simply leave payee blank
@Luca_B The internal way the program stores information about transfers has not changed, so you didn’t mess anything up. The only change here is in the User Interface for creating transfers and editing transactions.
@Phillip_Bradshaw the Payee can actually be blank in a regular transaction also. The field is just for your convenience in tracking all the funds to give to or get from an individual or organization. In addition, while using a Payee on a transfer transaction is very uncommon, there are some users who do use it as part of their recordkeeping.
So I’m not the only one has this confusion. Thanks for explanation.
Now I understand that internally a spending/income category essentially is an account, this makes perfect sense for a double entry accounting software.
However, I’d like to bring up a discussion. From perspective of a user, I’d say the old way seems better and less confusing. As the meaning “category“suggests, it is the type of the spending/income. Transfer is a movement of money, it is not a category in terms of semantic. explicitly differentiating income/spending/transfer make more sense for users who don’t know the underlying data structure and more intuitive.
Anyway, thanks for developers effort, and I’m very happy with kmm. But I really appreciate if the old style which distinguishes income/spending/transfer can come back, or a switch controls the behavior is also appreciated.
While I think the developers are open to suggestions for improving the UI, I don’t think the old tabs will be brought back. I do agree that something about the display might be changed to make it more obvious what to do, if you don’t know to just put the “other” account name in the “Category” drop-down, but I have not yet been able to think of any relatively simple change.
Hi only a question. Ok in category I select the account to trasnfer money but in “payer/payee”?

Payee is a field for your convenience to track the money you send to or get from individuals or stores. It is completely optional. I have never used a Payee in a transfer transaction, but some users do. It is your choice, and can be left blank.
