I have some problems with my KDE Neon experience

Hi, i’m using KDE Neon for a while now, and i have some little problems here and there which accumulate with the time and that was also (little problems accumulating making big troubles) the reason i left Windows… So i’m gonna try to list all here and i hope you can help me to fix some of them if not all!

Here is my setup:
OS: KDE neon 6.2 x86_64
Host: Pulse 17 B13VFK REV:1.0
Kernel: 6.8.0-49-generic
Packages: 2617 (dpkg), 21 (flatpak), 7 (snap)
Shell: bash 5.2.21
DE: Plasma 6.2.3
WM: kwin
Theme: Breeze [GTK2/3]
Icons: breeze [GTK2/3]
Terminal: konsole
CPU: 13th Gen Intel i7-13700H (20) @ 4.800GHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4060 Max-Q / Mobile
GPU: Intel Raptor Lake-P [Iris Xe Graphics]
Memory: 26668MiB / 31794MiB

I have a 2k 27’’ Monitor and a 1080p Monitor connected to it.

So, when i start my computer, and SDDM runs, it doesn’t have the same monitor settings that inside the OS, the screens are not in the right order and the 1080p is a replica of my Internal Laptop Monitor, and sometime if i type the password in the 2k it freezes and i need to type it also on the 1080p and then somehow it works!

I’m using Brave as a browser, and also using Activities to separate my work and my personal use, and sometimes when i run a new tab, it doesn’t appear because it’s sent to the other activity for some reason.

On Wayland, when i try to do a screensharing on Discord, it opens a popup asking me to choose the screen i want to share (not the one of discord but one of the system, above) and when i do it, it closes and show me the one of discord but then it opens again before i can click on start share or something, and it do it again and again and again…

The system randomly crash for no apparent reason, sometime at the moment of login after boot or after a waking up.

My icons on the desktop keep moving and don’t stay where i put them after a while!

Sometime, my bluetooth headset is detected as (it crashed just here, while i was only writing this…) hands free unit for some reason (so the audio quality is bad) and i need to manually disconnect it and connect it again!

When i copy something, sometime the whole OS freeze for few seconds before i can paste it somewhere (it can be just a small text/word)!

The list could still continue, but i forgot lot of things, in the first place, if you could help me to fix these issues, it would be a good start!

Thanks in advance for your help!

the easiest way to share your setup info is to click on the background and type info, then go the settings page and copy the info and paste it here

for the login screen, click on the background and type SDDM, go to the settings page and apply plasma settings to the SDDM screen

i’ve seen that you can assign windows to activities, but i don’t use them and don’t use discord so maybe others can help

suspend / resume issues are often due to inappropriate swap space, what does swapon say?

bluetooth drivers are hit and miss in linux, perhaps a different driver or distro will be needed to fix that (check ur batteries)

freezing on copy can also be related to swap space

Hi, thanks for you answer!

Here what i did after you message:

⚙ martin@martin-pulse17b13vfk  ~  swapon --show
NAME TYPE SIZE USED PRIO
/swapfile file 512M 510.9M -2

sudo chmod 600 /swapfile
sudo mkswap /swapfile
sudo swapon /swapfile

I also did what you said for SDDM but i still not tested, i’ll test it after.

What you said about assigning windows to activities (which i presume was KDE Windows Rules) made me think about it and i tried something with it that could fix this problem, i’ll see in the future if it happen again but for now i could not replicate it!

For the bluetooth it’s the “less annoying” problem for now, i can handle it if it’s the only problem left after all these fix!

Also if you need it, here are my stats with the way you said:

Operating System: KDE neon 6.2
KDE Plasma Version: 6.2.3
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.8.0
Qt Version: 6.8.0
Kernel Version: 6.8.0-49-generic (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 20 × 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i7-13700H
Memory: 31.0 Gio of RAM
Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® Graphics
Manufacturer: Micro-Star International Co., Ltd.
Product Name: Pulse 17 B13VFK
System Version: REV:1.0

(the first time i used neofetch)

By the way, i see here it says “Graphics Processor: Mesa Intel® Graphics” do it means that my desktop environnement is runned by my CPU’s GPU and not my Nvidia GPU? If yes can i change that to have better performance and how?

Because Brave and other Chromium based browsers do not play nice with Activities.

Might be related to this:

I wonder if you are using swap —which will be slow for copy/paste as it is sharing read/writes to your drive with normal system operations.

You are/were using a lot of ram at that moment, so I wonder if you have something running that just uses all of it at the time you recorded your system info, or maybe you have something with a memory leak sucking it all up.

It seems to be because of Brave (i have lot of tabs lol)

I do now, thanks to @skyfishgoo

We’ll see if it fix my issue!

Btw, how to move the notifications center here?

It was here when i was on KDE 5 and i prefer it!

This also sadly not worked :frowning:

what theme are you using? did you try it with breeze theme?

Yes i use the Breeze Theme

when you click on the (i) in the SDDM settings page, do you not get a preview of what the screen should look like?

Yes

if you change it to the other one does it ask you for the password?

and does that change the SDDM login screen upon reboot, or is it the same?

Yes, it asks me for the password, and i tried many combinations, like applying a new SDDM theme then applying the plasma settings to SDDM, same in reverse, same twice, and so on… Nothing changed!

Also, the virtual keyboard “maliit-keyboard” is only working on the SDDM screen, if i click on the button on the locked screen (like after a waking up) it just do nothing, and when i type “maliit-keyboard” in the terminal here is the result:

wordengine.cpp plugin "/usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/maliit/keyboard2/languages/en/libenplugin.so" loaded
inputmethod_p.h registerActiveLanguage(): activeLanguage is: "en"
in inputMethod.cpp setActiveLanguage() activeLanguage is: "en"
spellechecker.cpp in setLanguage() lang= "en" dictPath= "/usr/share/hunspell"
inputMethod::reset()
in clear preedit.. clearing word engine
spellechecker.cpp in setLanguage() aff_file= "/usr/share/hunspell/en_US.aff" dic_file= "/usr/share/hunspell/en_US.dic" user dictionary= "/home/martin/.local/share/maliit-keyboard/en_userDictionary.dic"
QSoundEffect(pulseaudio): Error decoding source file:///usr/share/maliit/keyboard2/sounds/key_tick2_quiet.wav

I tried to create an empty sound at /usr/share/maliit/keyboard2/sounds/key_tick2_quiet.wav but the error is the same!

I also tried to completely reinstall it, but i still got the error…

neon just be broke then.

How is it possible? I just installed it, it’s a brand new install because i had so many problems on my last install (the system wasn’t updatable anymore) so i grabbed an USB stick and downloaded the last stable version of KDE and installed the system on a new partition, this is a clean fresh install, i just reinstalled the apps i use everyday and so on and copied my settings from the last system by hand!

Do you think there is any fix?

A misconfiguration or missing piece that was accidentally left out or missed by neon, and no one has reported the bug?

or a general Plasma bug.

What i can do now then?

Also my notification popups are at wrong place, they should be around here normally!

(i even tried to force it here but it’s not working…)
