Include .STL previews in Dolphin thumbnails

Hi, so I just ran the whole gamut on this of trying to get it to work on Bazzite- no dice. keneric and stl-thumb do not seem to work here. It would be fantastic if a method of previewing stls and other 3d media was included in dolphin’s preview system.

Thank you and have a great day

This was already asked in Ways to generate thumbnail previews for .stl files in Dolphin?

stl-thumb do not seem to work here

This should work, review the steps in the guide GitHub - MLAB-project/stl-thumbnailer: Shows thumbnails of STL files in Nautilus file browser. The method for nautilus/GNOME files is also supported by dolphin.

In particular make sure you have an executable thumbnailer file for stl in /usr/share/thumbnailers/.

Then make sure to enable the preview of those files in dolphin preview settings.

I use F3D, as a thumbnail generator and as a 3D viewer. After install just open Dolphin preferences, Previews tab, and activate the format files you want.

I have F3D installed, but I don’t have the option in Dolphin to preview STL files. 3mf files have their built in thumbnails, but I can’t seem to get STL files to have thumbnails. Are there any other steps to make this work? An option in F3D maybe?

Hey,

I’m personally using the following project for just that. Once you install the two packages you will need to go to Dophin and enable it under configure dophin and then in the preview tab.

I tried this, idk if its cause I’m on bazzite but it doesnt work

I don’t seem to get this option through flatpak on bazzite

I tried this as well, might be broken due to bazzite idk

Hmm maybe. Did you try and just install the .rpm or did you compile the source.

Also there are two files you need to install for this. There is stl-thumb and then stl-thumb-kde.

I tried both iirc

Definitely, if dolphin is run in a flatpak, it might not be able to user plugged-in thumbnailers, neither cpp-plugin nor /usr/share/thumbnailers.

You might have some relevant log when you open dolphin from the terminal or in journalctl -t dolphin.

Thank you so much for the suggestion! F3D was what worked for me after I couldn’t get STL-thumb installed on my nobara (fedora based) system!

The flatpak didn’t work, I had to install it through the terminal. In the previews tab of dolphin’s settings, I had to enable “Autodesk 3D studio file”.
