Install WinBoat

Hello,

How do I install WinBoat in KDE Linux OS?

Not being familiar with this software, it might fall under KDE Linux/Install software not available in Discover - KDE Community Wiki.

We also have en empty page for “How to install software only available on Windows” that would probably be a better fit for documentation about how to do this once it’s fleshed out.

The page is currently empty because I have no interest or experience in running general non-game Windows software on Linux, and others who do have that interest and experience haven’t written the page yet.

Thanks guys,

I think I need to re-phrase my question:

I have downloaded and run ‘WinBoat-0.8.7-x86_64.AppImage’. I have been able to meet all the pre-requisites, but when the dialogue window asks where (location) to install the VM, I can’t write a path nor use the Select-button. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I don’t know. Since this is 3rd-party software, I think you’ll have to do some troubleshooting yourself.

For what it’s worth, it’s been my experience that despite AppImage apps being billed as “universal” and “runs anywhere”, this is not really the case; most that I’ve used rely on a variety of assumptions about the host operating system that can be untrue and cause the AppImage-packaged app to not work properly.

Since KDE Linux is fairly un-traditional with its read-only /usr volume, it’s quite possible that the AppImage has made a bad assumption about something. Or maybe there’s just a bug in the embedded installer.

Good luck figuring it out!

Ok, thanks! :slightly_smiling_face:

Totte, have you tried Linux Wine? It does same things than WinBoat.

I have heard, that Wine can run Windows programs like MS Office and many others too.

Winboat is a virtual machine that runs Windows. Wine is a translation layer that runs Windows apps in a Linux environment.

They are not the same. You will not be able to run Office 365 or up-to-date Adobe software locally with Wine.

My suggestion is maybe to ask the Winboat Devs in this case.

An alternative until you work this out is installing Gnome-Booxes from Flathub.

You won’t get the same thing where you can see windows next to your Linux apps, but I guess it depends on whether that was the reason why you wanted Winboat specifically or if you just need to run Windows software in a virtual machine every so often.

Another one that is very similar to Winboat is Winapps, the installation is very manual though and again you might be stuck on an immutable distro.
