I can’t stand trackpad gestures in general, and I’ve read that they’re hard coded on Wayland. This is currently stopping me from installing Linux on my laptop. Is this still the case, and if so, is anyone working on it?
There has been a blog post a while ago : Gesture customization mini-sprint - KDE Blogs
But nothing since there ![]()
There is 3 thing that are triggered by trackpad gestures, if you do not use theme you can disable them to disable the gesture too :
- Virtual desktop : just keep 1 desktop
- Overview and Desktop grid : go to desktop effects section in system settings and disable the Overview option
- Zoom : In system settings, go to Accessibility > Zoom and Magnifier and disable it (you can also disable it in desktop effects like the previous one)
Hello, while the Wayland trackpad gestures indeed hardcoded, overriding and then disabling those gestures is possible using this third-party script.
IIRC, setting a gesture’s action: none will effectively disable that gesture, but I can’t find an example in the docs. I also see it has complications in Kwin 6.4 requiring a small workaround.
As the developer of the effect notes below, gestures can be disabled by setting up a small configuration, minus the actions property.
Hope this helps while they continue to figure out a modular approach!
This config for the plugin mentioned above will disable all gestures:
touchpad:
gestures:
- type: swipe
direction: any
conditions:
- $fingers >= 3
- type: pinch
direction: any
There is no action property, just don’t set actions to disable the gesture.
No workarounds are required, one person was/is experiencing a weird crash bug I couldn’t reproduce, but they don’t seem to be interested in helping me find the cause.
