Kactivitymanagerd failed to launch seemingly on login

I am not filing this under a bug as I believe it may simply have been something I did to cause this. This causes plasmashell to sometimes fail on login, and thus I have to log out and log back in to fix it. I confirmed the issue being kactivitymanagerd through journalctl:

Aborting shell load: The activity manager daemon (kactivitymanagerd) is not running.

The fact that logging in again makes it work makes this even more confusing, as it means that, sometimes, kactivitymanagerd DOES launch perfectly fine. Checking its logs has provided no useful information.

Some other information that may or may not be helpful:

  • The login manager I’m using is plasma-login-manager.
  • I am using Wayland.
  • My GPU is an AMD Radeon R7, if my specs are somehow relevant.
  • Recently, I have been admittedly fooling around a bit with launching plasmashell manually and whatnot, so perhaps something I did there is the cause.
  • I recently installed kwin_x11 when attempting something (probably) not relevant to this.

Does anyone know what I may have done to cause this? If this is a problem with my distribution (Fedora 44), then I am willing to move.

for me this usually comes from a race or leftover after hand-starting plasmashell.

next time it fails (ctrl+alt+f3 b4 u log out again):

-systemctl --user status kactivitymanagerd --no-pager
-systemctl --user reset-failed kactivitymanagerd
-systemctl --user start kactivitymanagerd
-journalctl --user -u kactivitymanagerd -b --no-pager | tail -n 40

-rm -f ~/.cache/plasmashell*
-ls ~/.config/autostart ~/.config/plasma-workspace/env

in plasma-login-manager pick Plasma (Wayland) once so the kwin_x11 install doesnt yank the session sideways.
