Hi all. I am trying to use the Kasts podcast application on Linux Mint 22.3 - Cinnamon 64-bit. I am having a recurring problem where my computer will freeze while using the Kasts 25.12.1 application. Audio seems to continue to play normally, but the cursor won’t move and I haven’t found anything the computer will respond to other than the REISUB sequence to reboot my computer. It appears to be triggered randomly while I am clicking between the different buttons on the side of Kasts (queue, discover, subscriptions, etc) or when I am trying to look at the list of all episodes for a given podcast. This hasn’t happened on my computer except when I am actively using Kasts. If I leave the Kasts application on the Queue page and just click “play” on the new episodes that pop up, it seems to work - I don’t remember it ever crashing while using the application like that and it can play for hours without issues. This problem has persisted for a while - it was present on Mint 21 and on the prior few Kast and KDE updates.
I can’t see any way to use the KDE Crash Report tool because I have to reboot the computer when this happens. I tried looking at the coredumpctl results, as described on this page. I see some results with the column EXE saying /app/bin/kasts-bin, but some times I know the freezing happened aren’t present, and I don’t remember whether or not the times on that page correspond to times Kasts froze. Example:
TIME PID UID GID SIG COREFILE EXE SIZE
Thu 2026-01-22 00:15:40 EST 4337 1000 1000 SIGABRT present /app/bin/kasts-bin 82.9M
Mon 2026-01-12 06:54:46 EST 25084 1000 1000 SIGABRT present /app/bin/kasts-bin 14.7M
When I run sudo coredumpctl gdb 25084, it doesn’t look like the “How to create useful crash reports” page is describing. I don’t see a gdb prompt, I see a long text dump which I would roughly divide into six sections.
- It starts with information about the PID and my system, ending with
Message: Process 25084 (kasts-bin) of user 1000 dumped core.
- Then it says
Stack trace of thread 81 followed by some lines I guess describing the stack trace
- Then GNU info about gdb and the license
- Then many different “warning, can’t open file” lines like
warning: Can’t open file /app/bin/kasts-bin during file-backed mapping note processing
- Then many lines all saying
[New LWP <integer>] where “” is a one- or two-digit number. I see the “Type for more” etc line at the bottom of this text dump.
- If I keep hitting return, I eventually hit this:
[New LWP 87]
Core was generated by `kasts-bin’.
–Type for more, q to quit, c to continue without paging–
Program terminated with signal SIGABRT, Aborted.
#0 0x00007a5250a9d51c in ?? ()
[Current thread is 1 (LWP 81)]
Then I see "(gdb)”. If I type “bt” here, I see a bunch of lines like this #0 0x00007a5250a9d51c in ?? () and if I hit “enter” it displays more and then eventually takes me back to the (gdb) prompt.
Is this actually useful or related to my problem? Should I be copying the stuff before the gdb prompt into the bug report? Or just the #0 0x00007a5250a9d51c in ?? () stuff appearing after the gdb prompt? That line looks similar to what that “How to create useful crash reports” page says I will see if I need to install a debugging package, but it’s missing the part that page lists that’s supposed to tell me which packages are missing. Is there something else I can try on my end before submitting the bug report?
Hi all. Looks like the problem was on my end! I asked for help on the Linux Mint forums and someone suggested I try freeing up more space on my hard drive and changing to a recent Nvidia proprietary driver (I have been using the Nouveau open source graphics driver because I was having a problem with the Nvidia drivers a few years ago). Once I followed both of those suggestions, I was able to start using Kasts again and haven’t seen any more problems after several days of normal use. I’m glad, Kasts is great software and way more featureful than any other Linux podcatchers I’ve tried.
I hope this information may be helpful to anyone who is having a similar problem!
