Kate and Krusader NOT auto-updating directory or file changes

As of a recent update, Kate and Krusader seem to not auto-update.

Krusader - I have to click on the directory to get it to refresh. Up until now it refreshed automatically.

Kate - I have to manually refresh an open file. The auto-refresh function stopped working. Up until now if any of the open files changed, a window would pop-up asking if I wanted to set it to auto-update and then it would do so.

I do not know what has changed to cause this loss of functionality. Whatever it is affected both programs at the same time.

I do not know where to start looking for the problem.

Can anyone help?

Hi - are those packages installed from the Ubuntu distribution package repositories, ex. using the apt command, or from the “Ubuntu” software source in Discover? Or, are they installed from the Snap or Flatpak repositories?

Hi @johnandmegh
These are installed straight from synaptic or apt so I assume they are the Ubuntu distributions, nothing fancy or custom. The first thing I do with any Ubuntu installation upon first boot is to disable and remove Snap, including disabling the sneak installation of Snap with other applications. Flatpak is NOT installed.

Ah - sorry, I don’t have personal experience on that front, but in that case, I’d recommend also checking around with Ubuntu-specific resources. To my knowledge, Ubuntu 24.04 wouldn’t have adopted new upstream versions of KDE applications like Kate or Krusader.

In that case, a new issue following an update is likely to be caused by some interaction between the older components that the Ubuntu folks are stitching together as part of their long-term support approach.

@johnandmeg,

I had thought that the old LTS would keep the old KDE, at least on the default installation repos which is all I have set. My idea was stick to the LTS, and albeit less new software on the LTS repos would make updating stable and simple. At one time it did. However, I cannot afford losing a couple days after every update trying to get the computer to work again.

My 22.04 systems are NOT having the same problem.

One last thought - 24.04 no longer automounts FSTAB entries. It has been reported that after some work, NTFS drives might be able to be coaxed to automount (I don’t have any). However, the same problem occurs for my BTRFS disks. The exact same FSTAB entries, with the same disks that automounted under 22.04, do NOT automount under 24.04. The drives have to be manually mounted. This may or may not be related to the problem since communication with disks is related to auto-updating directories and file contents.

There have been several reports of the same problem. Oddly the responses to a few of the posted questions on this topic are needlessly hostile and non-informative, to even banning the people asking them, as opposed to just letting someone that understands the problem explain it.

A couple people have said that many of the problems with 24.04 just go away if 24.04 is installed under Windows, I think they call it Windows Subsystem for Linux.

It seems that compared to 22.04, the 24.04 version is bad news. I don’t see subsequent versions improving if changes in fundamental functionality are not clearly documented.

Thanks for looking into it.
